Theo Epstein is building his base.
Though the Chicago Cubs' new president of baseball operations has kept mum about the future of Mike Quade, Epstein was blunt Tuesday about player development and scouting being keys to a North Side World Series.
In a statement issued Thursday, the Cubs and San Diego Padres jointly announced that Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod will leave the Padres to accept positions with the Cubs.
Hoyer will be named executive vice president/general manager and McLeod as senior vice president/scouting and player development, the announcement reads.
The Cubs agreed to send a yet-to-be-named player to the Padres as compensation.
The teams will hold press conferences after the World Series, according to the statement, and said they will reserve further comment until after the series.
At that time the Padres are expected to announce Josh Byrnes as Hoyer’s successor.

Imagine you're a 12-year-old Red Sox who has known nothing but winning his (or her) entire life. You were only 5 years old when the team won its first World Series of your lifetime and, based on everybody else's reaction, you could tell it was a big deal. You were all of 8 years old when the Red Sox won again. Imagine, for you, winning is a habit. Theo Epstein can. Epstein...

Hoyer will be reunited with Theo Epstein, who left...
Throughout all the talk surrounding Theo Epstein's decision to leave the Red Sox for the Chicago Cubs, it was only a matter of time before Ben Cherington officially took over as Boston's general manager. He was finally introduced as such at a press conference on Tuesday. Cherington's been in the organization for years, working closely alongside Epstein, but it's always...
For all he accomplished while with the Red Sox, Theo Epstein looked a bit awestruck when he was introduced to the Boston media contingent some nine years ago. He was young, likely quite nervous and required some choreography and a few deep breaths to get through that first question-and-answer session. When Ben Cherington was officially introduced Wednesday at Fenway Park, it was...

CHICAGO (AP) -- Theo Epstein was introduced Tuesday as the new president of baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs, who hope he can work the same magic for championship-starved team as he did for the Boston Red Sox.
Theo Epstein always planned to be on a 10-year plan with the Boston Red Sox, which he and some close to him assumed meant leaving the Red Sox after his 10th season as general manager when his contract was up next year – something he even discussed with his bosses when things were going well in Boston...
Signed RHE (right-handed executive) Theo Epstein to a five-year contract. [10/25]
When the Nationals signed Jayson Werth to a seven-year contract last winter, we were told that what they’d really done, in addition to the more mundane achievement of finding a right fielder, was “change the culture.” The most important byproduct of the move wouldn’t necessarily be Werth’s...
