Three batters into the game, it appeared Chicago Cubs starter Travis Wood might not make it out of the first inning.
Jose Tabata led with a triple off the center-field fence and scored on a wild pitch to put the Pittsburgh Pirates ahead 1-0. Jordy Mercer followed with a double that bounced into the left-field bleachers, and Andrew McCutchen singled to put runners at the corners.
''They came out hacking, they had a game plan right there, and fortunately enough I was able to get out of there with just one run,'' Wood said.
Wood settled down to pitch six innings. But the Cubs lost 3-2 as Francisco Liriano took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning and pinch-hitter Justin Morneau singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth.
Pittsburgh, which began the day tied with St. Louis for the NL Central lead, took three of four from the last-place Cubs and won for the sixth time in seven games.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been carried most of the season by their pitching, especially the starting rotation. The majority of their starters have performed well this year. Even injuries could not bring down the rotation thanks to the depth options. With the end of the season approaching, the Pirates have their best starters going...
Only two more weeks left of the 2013 season and year two of the Chicago Cubs rebuild. The week started off promising for the Cubs as they took two out of three from the playoff hopeful Cincinnati Reds. However, against the equally hopeful Pittsburgh Pirates, the club pulled off only one win in a four game series.
Monday saw the Cubs defeat the Cincinnati Reds 2-0 in a pitching...
Wandy Rodriguez has been shut down for the season. (Photo by: David Hague)
The Pittsburgh Pirates will be shutting down Wandy Rodriguez for the rest of the season, according to manager Clint Hurdle. Hurdle said that Rodriguez continues to pitch with “pain and discomfort”.
I’ve written recently about how the playoff rotation could look if Rodriguez was able to come back. He...
James McDonald has elected free agency. Photo by Mark Olson.
According to the MLB.com transactions page (h/t to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish), James McDonald has elected free agency after being outrighted to Indianapolis. The Pirates designated him for assignment last week, and he cleared waivers in the process. He’s now eligible to sign with any team for the remainder of the...

The Bucs – now tied for first place again – will look to maintain that and hopefully regain it outright with a win today over the Cubbies. They’ll be going for a series victory, and a loss and split would be pretty disappointing. All three games in this series have been tight so far...
Pittsburgh Pirates' outfielder Starling Marte faced live pitching prior to Saturday's win against the Chicago Cubs. He faced left handed pitcher Kris Johnson and then entered the game as a late inning pinch runner and defensive replacement.
As reported by George Von Benko of MLB.com, manager Clint Hurdle said that Marte is getting close to seeing regular game action...
This year has been a tremendous year for the National League Central. The Pittsburgh Pirates have their first winning season since 1992. The Cincinnati Reds are in position for a wildcard spot. The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to repeat previous year’s successes.
The NL Central’s playoff race seems like the most ignored story in sports right now, and yet it has the most drama...
In the final installment of our 2013 Chicago Cubs minor league All-Star team, we select three outfielders and identify several others who deserve honorable mention, including the two best outfielders in the system who did not qualify because of injury-shortened seasons.
All three of our All-Star outfielders were culled from the Sothern League (SL) AA Tennessee Smokies...
Last night's loss was frustrating, but really, it's not a huge deal so long as it remains an isolated incident. I was hoping to see the Pirates take six of eight from the Cubs and Padres and they can certainly still do that even with last night's loss.
Gerrit Cole returns to the mound after his breathtaking domination of the Rangers on Monday. I won't lie; I...
The Pirates were able to erase a tough Friday night loss and and otherwise empty night of offense on Saturday with two big swings of the bat from Jose Tabata and Marlon Byrd, leading them to a 2-1 victory over the Cubs and back in to a first place tie.
Gerrit Cole followed his tremendous outing in Texas with another gem in this game, despite a hiccup in the first inning when one...
I know that he's really only emerged over his last two starts, but suddenly I'm not sure that there's any Pirate pitcher that I feel more comfortable with on the mound than Gerrit Cole. Cole got into some trouble in the first inning tonight and got partially bailed out by the defense behind him, then he shut the Cubs down over the next six innings. In the first inning...
There are two ways to look at this game. One way would be to simply say this: Andrew Cashner was freaking awesome. The other way would be to pick at it. To say that the Pirates haven't really hit well lately, despite all the wins, and that AJ Burnett has been incredible for the Pirates and that he clearly means a lot to the team both on the field and in the locker room, but geez...
The Milwaukee Brewers' Wily Peralta and the Chicago Cubs' Edwin Jackson haven't performed the way they had hoped for their respective clubs and one of them is likely to lead the NL in losses.
Peralta will try to avert his third straight loss to visiting Chicago on Monday night while Jackson looks to avoid his fourth defeat versus Milwaukee this season.
The only battle...
