Chicago Cubs & the benefits of signing Edwin Jackson

Assuming that the deal actually goes through as planned, which is easier said than done on the North Side these days, the Chicago Cubs will have made their most noteworthy signing of the offseason, in bringing in starter Edwin Jackson.  Jackson, who has become the very definition of a journeyman over the last several years, finally gets a home for more than a few months in agreeing...

The enigma of Edwin Jackson's market

Unless Edwin Jackson is signed by a team he has already played with, he will be pitching for his eighth team in 2013. He is 29 years old. Switching teams is common for relief pitchers. But young starters who have made thirty or more starts for six straight seasons usually get to hang their hats somewhere for a little while. Durable and above replacement pitchers usually find a home...

Report: Cubs closing in on Edwin Jackson

The Chicago Cubs are closing in on four-year, $52 million deal with free-agent pitcher Edwin Jackson, according to an ESPN The Magazine report. Jackson, 29, went 10-11 with a 4.03 ERA in 189 2/3 innings with the Washington Nationals in 2012, after signing a one-year, $11-million deal with them. The Nationals didn't make a qualifying offer, so they won't receive draft-pick...

Indians in mix for Edwin Jackson

The Cleveland Indians are now talking to starting pitcher Edwin Jackson about a contract for 2013. Jackson is also being courted by the Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs. Bidding for Jackson is reaching the four-year and $50 million mark reports John Heyman. Last season Jackson pitched for the Washington Nationals posting a 10-11 record and a 4.03 ERA in 31 starts. Jackson was the only...

Edwin Jackson signs with Cubs for four years, $52 million

Edwin Jackson has chosen to sign with the Chicago Cubs. Four-years and $52 million are pretty good reasons. Multiple teams had interst in the 29-year-old but yesterday the bidding was between the Cubs and Texas Rangers. In Chicago, Jackson will join a staff that includes Matt Garza, Jeff Samardzija, Scott Feldman and Travis Wood. The team also has Scott Baker who should return in...

Report: Cubs, Edwin Jackson Agree to Four-Year, $52 Million Contract

Edwin Jackson is only 29 years old, but he’s already played for seven Major League Baseball franchises. While that may be a red flag to a lot of teams, the Chicago Cubs are about to give the right-hander a lot of money to join his eighth club. CSNChicago.com’s Patrick Mooney reports that Jackson has agreed to a four-year contract worth $52 million. The 29-year-old is coming off...

Better Know a Cub – Edwin Jackson

Edwin Jackson used to be the #4 prospect in baseball. Getting his first taste of the bigs in  2003 (as a 19-year old, no less), Jackson had a huge reputation to live up to early on in his career. For a long, long time, he never lived up to it. 2004 20 LAD NL 2 1 .667 7.30 8 5 1 0 0 0 24.2 31 20 20 7 11 1 16 0 0 0 113 57 1.703 11.3 2.6 4.0 5.8 1.45   2005 21 LAD NL 2 2 .500...

Cubs Sign Edwin Jackson

Last winter, I was flummoxed at the league’s apparent lack of interest in Edwin Jackson. He’d just put up his third straight solid season at age 27, and had established himself as a durable, effective +3 to +4 win starter. Unfortunately, in that post, I made a pretty bad assumption: Someone’s going to get a steal with Edwin Jackson, and given what he’s likely to do for...

Cubs finally get their starter in Edwin Jackson

After failing to trade for Dan Haren of the Angels and failing to sign Anibal Sanchez of the Tigers, the Chicago Cubs finally have the veteran starting pitcher they've been craving: journeyman Edwin Jackson, who the team agreed to a four-year, $52 million deal with on Thursday, substantially less than the $80 million that Sanchez got over five years from the Tigers. Jackson...

Edwin Jackson Signs

Patrick Mooney was first with the news, and the usual suspects seem to be in agreement, though we at Obstructed View reserve the right to retract any and all free agent signing stories up until opening day. The deal is 4 years, $52 million and does not include a no-trade clause, per Heyman. Brief thoughts on the deal, in the context of the entire offseason: The Cubs seem determined...

MLB Rumors: Will Chicago Cubs Sign Edwin Jackson?

While they may have some up short in signing Anibal Sanchez, it appears as if we could see the Chicago Cubs sign Edwin Jackson, as both sides are closing in on a contract that could be for four years worth $52 million. This, according to Buster Olney of ESPN. Jackson went just 10-11 with a 4.03 ERA with the Washington Nationals in 2012. Jackson was hoping for a long term deal prior...

Transaction Analysis: The Signings of E-Jax and Pierzynski

One player was welcomed to Chicago this week when the Cubs signed Edwin Jackson to a four year contract worth $52 million. Another player, A.J. Pierzynski, bid the Windy City adieu leaving the White Sox as a free agent and signing a one year contract with the Rangers. Jackson goes from being an overlooked member of a loaded Nationals rotation in 2012 to being relied on to pitch near...

MLB Free Agency Rumors: Tribe in mix for Edwin Jackson

While the Cleveland Indians attempted to recruit free agent outfield Nick Swisher as if he were a high schooler looking to name his collegiate future, it appears that their conquests do not end there. FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports that Chris Antonetti and company are eying up veteran starting pitcher Edwin Jackson, potentially adding to a rotation that recently added power...

Two Pitcher Redemption

I think George Carlin said it best: “I’ve never ****** a 10, but one night I ****** 5 twos” Which, you know, might be the perfect way to describe the Cubs 2013 rotation. The Cubs have handed out contracts to Edwin Jackson (4yrs, 52MM) and Carlos Villanueva (2yrs, 10MM), rounding out a rotation of not great but not quite awful starters. MLB Depth Charts projects the starting...
