It looks like the Cubs might be getting their rotation sorted out and finding that left-handed pitcher they’ve been needing to add.
After floating out names like Joe Saunders or even Mark Buehrle, the Cubs have been talking with a much more affordable option in Pittsburgh Pirates free agent hurler Paul Maholm.
Similar to Matt Garza, Maholm’s 2011 record is completely deceiving. The lefty went just 6-14 with the Pirates, but posted a solid ERA of 3.66 in just over 162 innings.
Maholm is not unlike Ted Lilly, who the Cubs traded to the Dodgers in 2010, in that he’s nothing flashing, but he’s a reliable arm in the rotation, who can eat innings and not give up the big home run. He also doesn’t walk a ton of guys, with a solid WHIP of 1.29 with the Bucs last season.
Of course, the biggest issue with a potential deal with Maholm comes down to money. He made just a touch over $6.25 million last season and might actually be looking for a raise from that. Howeve...
