The Cubs re-signed Ryan Dempster to a 4-year $52 million dollar deal. The deal is structured thusly: $4 million signing bonus 2009 Salary: $8 Million 2010 Salary: $12.5 Million 2011 Salary: $13.5 Million 2012 Salary: $14 Million (Player Option) The only thing I love more than this contract and how it's structured is....

  • How can you be surprised he took this deal? This is the first solidly good year he's ever had. Dempster has never had an ERA below 3 before this year; he's actually had an ERA above 4 seven of his 11 years in the majors; he's had only four winning seasons (including 2008) in his 11 year career; he blew nine saves in 2006. The list goes on about how this guy has been at best mediocre his entire career. He all of a sudden has a good season and everyone thinks he's the next coming of Johan Santana. I'm surprised the Cubs gave him that much money for that many years.

I would be willing to wager that this guy doesn't make it to the All-Star Break next year before he is sent back to the bullpen.
