Found January 18, 2012 on MLB Trade Rumors:
The Cubs completed their minor league deal with catcher Jason Jaramillo, MLBTR's Tim Dierkes has learned. MLBTR reported in December that the Cubs were nearing a deal with the 29-year-old. Jaramillo has accumulated 366 big league plate appearances over the last three seasons with the Pirates, hitting .235/.293/.327. A former second-round pick of the Phillies, Jaramillo missed much of this season with an elbow injury. The switch-hitter will be a candidate for the Cubs' backup catcher job behind Geovany Soto, a role filled by Koyie Hill the last several years. Jaramillo is a native of Wisconsin.  MLBTR's Tim Dierkes contributed to this post.

Cubs Sign Jason Jaramillo! (and other more important stuff)

OK, after all the hoopla over the Cubs moves in late December and early January, things have slowed down quite a bit lately. But that's not to say there aren't some interesting things going on, you just have to dig a little harder to find it. While the signing of Jason Jaramillo doesn't amount to much (he's likely just organizational depth), it appears that the...

Is Yoenis Céspedes a Good Fit for the Chicago Cubs?

According to Diario Libre, the Chicago Cubs appear to be the leading in the chase to acquire Cuban defector and free agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. The intriguing center fielder spoke with the media on Monday night, sharing this unexpected tidbit: “Of all the teams who have come, the most interested in me has been the Chicago Cubs,” Cespedes said Monday at the Quisqueya...

Pirates Add Six Non-Roster Invitees to Spring Training

The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced that they’ve added six non-roster invitees to Spring Training. The new additions are Gerrit Cole, Michael Crotta, Ramon Cabrera, Eric Fryer, Tony Sanchez, and Robbie Grossman. Of the group, only Crotta and Fryer have major league experience, both spending time in the majors in 2011. I don’t see any of the group making the majors out...

Yesterday was the deadline for teams and arbitration eligible players to exchange salary figures for arbitration. The Pittsburgh Pirates reached pre-arbitration deals with six of the eight eligible players, and exchanged figures with the remaining two players. Here is a look at how each player did through arbitration, looking at the MLBTR estimates and the actual money that the players...

Cubs bring back Rodrigo Lopez

The Chicago Cubs have reportedly signed veteran right-hander Rodrigo Lopez to a minor league contract and invited him to Spring Training.  The 36 year old Lopez has bounced around the baseball landscape since leaving the Baltimore Orioles following the disastrous 2006 season when he went 9-18 with a 5.90 ERA.  After briefs stints in Colorado, Arizona and Philadelphia Lopez resurfaced...

Wanted: Somebody to Write Tweets and Facebook Postings for the Chicago Cubs

This is the view from the Wrigley Field press box. It is, and I'm speaking from experience here as this picture comes from my personal archives, one of the best views in all of professional sports. It can also be your office if you're lucky. The Cubs are hiring a Social Media and Public Relations Assistant to help craft a favorable image of the team with the general public...

This Date in Pirates History: January 17

On this date in 1895 the Pittsburgh Pirates traded pitcher Red Ehret, along with cash to the St Louis Browns for pitcher Pink Hawley. Hawley was just 22 years old and while he had a poor record at 30-58 in three years with...

Cespedes: Cubs Are Leading Suitors

Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes says the Cubs are his most serious suitor, according to Dionisio Soldevila of the Associated Press (link via DiarioLibre.com). The free agent outfielder isn’t yet a free agent, but he’s playing Winter Ball in the Dominican Republic and MLB teams continue eyeing him.  "Of all the teams who have come, the Chicago Cubs have been most interested...

Ludwick to the Reds

The Reds signed Ryan Ludwick to a one-year contract, and Redleg Nation is not impressed: File this under “It could be worse”: Best thing about Ryan Ludwick is that he doesn’t spell his name “J-u-a-n P-i-e-r-r-e” or “R-i-c-k A-n-k-i-e-l.” Ryan Ludwick’s career certainly seems to be fading as he ages into his early 30s. Teams may remember his outstanding 2008...
