Found January 16, 2009 on Another Cubs Blog:
So begins the period of meaningless signings. The Cubs signed So Taguchi to a minor league contract worth $900,000 if he makes the team. I suppose this is to somehow make Kosuke Fukudome feel more comfortable. The Cubs have really odd beliefs about these people from Asia. It’s like they believe they can’t succeed without the presence of other Asians. That being said, this is a meaningless signing. The odds of him making the team are rather slim so this is just to make Fukudome comfortable in Arizona as the club did last season with some pitcher I can’t remember right now. [UPDATE @11:07 PM] The Cubs also signed Ronny Cedeno was was arbitration eligible for the first time. He’ll earn $822,000 in 2009.
