Found July 08, 2013 on My Sports Rumors:
There seems to be some confusion out of Chicago as Jon Heyman of CBS Sports is reporting that the Chicago Cubs are considering keeping Matt Garza. Just yesterday we mentioned how the Washington Nationals were showing interest in Garza, like many other teams. This is pretty hard to believe after six months of non-stop talk of the Cubbies trading Garza at the deadline. In what could be a dramatic turnaround, the Cubs are now considering keeping righthanded starter Matt Garza on the North Side of Chicago. Cubs officials recently have broached such a possibility, though one person familiar with the situation suggested a multiyear deal isn’t necessarily likely at this pint and that a gap still exists in discussions. While a trade still remains an option for Garza, for the first time in more than a year there are discussions about possibly signing Garza long-term. It had been presumed for weeks he would be traded for sure. The Cubs could also trade Garza, then try to re-engage him in the winter, another distinct possibility. (Jon Heyman of CBS Sports) In my opinion there are three scenarios here: 1. Theo Epstein is throwing up a smoke screen here. He’s wanting other teams to think he’s going to keep Garza in an attempt to get a better haul. 2. Theo really does want Garza on his team and is now willing to pay up. or 3. I’m thinking this is the most likely. The Cubs are continuing to shop Garza while also negotiating an extension. Esptein would be able to gauge how much money Garza wants in free agency and hopefully negotiate that next contract. Theo would then trade Garza for pieces and hope that Garza then signs back with them in the off season. Number three is far fetched and could potentially get the Cubbies in trouble but would it really surprise anyone? Regardless of what’s going on here this is very strange. Garza was on the trading block for so long and now the Cubs want to keep him? It just makes no sense, no sense at all.

Possible landing spots for the Cubs' Matt Garza

After being unable to deal him at last year’s trade deadline, it is once again time for the Chicago Cubs to try and trade RHP Garza for a package of prospects. Garza is coming off of an injury and has looked very strong in his return, posting a 3.45 ERA to go along with a 4-1 record and 52 strikeouts. Due to his recent hot streak, Garza has emerged as the consensuses pick for...

MLB Trade Deadline 2013: Top Suitors for Cubs Matt Garza

As was the case during last year’s trade deadline before an elbow injury derailed the rest of his season, Matt Garza is once again one of the premier names being shopped around and gaining interest across both leagues. Although Garza missed the later half of last season and almost the first two months of this season with injuries and set backs, the Cubs’ starter has been on a...

Matt Garza: Cubs extension talks likely a ploy

Tuesday brought some interesting news on the Matt Garza trade front, and it wasn't something that most of us had expected. With the last two starts that Garza has made being believed to be his last with the Chicago Cubs, most of us were surprised to hear that the Cubs were actually talking about an extension with the right hander. After starting the season on the disabled...

Matt Garza Acquisition Could Make Red Sox Favorites for American League Title

The Boston Red Sox are currently 5-1 second-favorites to win the American League pennant, trailing only the Detroit Tigers (13-4). Would a potential Red Sox trade for Chicago Cubs right-handed pitcher Matt Garza change that order? Garza is clearly the top pitcher thought to be available on the trade market. There was news out of Chicago on Monday that perhaps the Cubs might want...

Nats show interest in Garza

Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza is one of the prized pieces available at this years deadline so there’s no doubt contenders will come calling. Today we’ve learned that the Washington Nationals have begun to show interest, although it’s not at the point where an official offer has been made. Earlier today, Manager Davey Johnson called any discussion of the Nationals trading...

Garza's value peaking at right time

Matt Garza pitched impressively. Then he spoke candidly. Late Monday night, after what might have been his final start for the Chicago Cubs, Garza confirmed reports that his representatives have spoken with the team about a contract extension. The chances for a long-term deal, Garza said, are "as real as a trade." But he also acknowledged the possibility of a move before...

Giants Rumors: San Francisco's interest in Cubs' Matt Garza 'growing'

The San Francisco Giants appear to be setting their main focus on a bigger fish after losing out on the Ricky Nolasco sweepstakes to the rival Dodgers. While the Dodgers are playing good baseball, you can't really say that about the Giants. They have been losing games, batting out of order and battling injuries to pretty much everyone. The Giants after losing out on Ricky...

Cubs-White Sox Preview

While he's attracting attention from other teams, Matt Garza claims to be focused on the next start for his current club. The right-hander will seek to lead the Chicago Cubs to their first season sweep of the White Sox in 15 years in Monday night's makeup game at U.S. Cellular Field. Garza's name has continued to swirl in trade rumors, but it's hardly hindered his...

The Matt Garza/Matt Harvey Connection

You’re going to be reading a lot about Matt Garza, if you haven’t already. This being July, it’s officially trading season, and Garza is probably the best starting pitcher on the market. So, rumors. Let me try to distill what I’ve seen: there’s talk the Cubs might reverse course and sign Garza to a long-term extension, but that probably won’t happen, and Garza will probably...

Red Sox Shouldn’t Consider Paying Big Price for Matt Garza, As Upgrade to Rotation Would Be Minimal

Oct. 19, 2008. The Rays punched their ticket to their first World Series in franchise history, and Matt Garza left a lasting impression on Red Sox fans. Garza, who earned a victory in Game 3 of the ALCS six days prior, shut the Red Sox down for seven innings in Game 7. He allowed just one run on two hits while striking out nine. It was the type of performance that you applaud regardless...

The pre-All Star Game Cubs rundown

There are way too many storylines to go through this time of year.  Between the promotion and successes of various Cubs prospects in the minor leagues, the impending trades of certain Cubs assets such as Matt Garza, the international free agent signing period and the still-unsigned Cubs draft picks including Kris Bryant (we’ll know by 4 PM Central on Friday), we have a hefty slate...

Cubs 8, White Sox 2

Matt Garza pitched seven strong innings, Alfonso Soriano homered and scored four runs, and the Chicago Cubs pulled away late to beat the White Sox 8-2 on Monday night. Dave Sappelt had a career-high four hits, while Soriano had three. Luis Valbuena drove in three runs, hitting the tiebreaking two-run double and scoring during a five-run eighth. Garza (5-1), meanwhile, came through...

White Sox-Cubs Make-Up Game Preview

The White Sox and Cubs will officially wrap up their Crosstown Series with a makeup game on Monday night at US Cellular Field.  The game was rained out shortly after starting back in May, and the slate was wiped clean.  The Sox are fresh off a predictable sweep at the hands of the Rays in Tampa, while the Cubs won two of three from Pittsburgh at Wrigley.  This is a one...

Matt Garza, Avisail Garcia Centerpieces for Jim Bowden ‘Blockbuster’ Trade Proposal

Chicago closer Kevin Gregg may be on the Detroit Tigers’ radar as the July 31 trade deadline approaches. But what about starter Matt Garza, who, like Gregg, will be a free agent after this season? ESPN’s Jim Bowden, formerly the GM for the Reds and Nationals, suggests a package deal that sends Garza and Gregg to the Tigers for Avisail Garcia, Rick Porcello and 2012 second-round...
