Today’s version of Jonathan Sanchez was the same one that went 1-9 with an 8.07 ERA last year, and that quickly ended any hopes of a sweep for the Pirates. What a mess. Sanchez gave us a bit of hope in the early innings of his first start, but today’s outing was a completely different story. The D-Backs hit him extremely hard right from the get-go, and his usual wildness also came in to play. With one out in the first, Sanchez allowed a long double but had a great chance to pick off the runner. He threw to third and missed Josh Harrison by about 20 feet, and the run scored. That summed up his day. Arizona shelled him for 9 hits (2 of them homers) and 9 runs in just 3.1 innings. He was either missing the zone by quite a bit or getting pounded whenever he did throw strikes. Absolutely miserable outing. I don’t know if the Bucs’ current pitching situation will allow them to boot Sanchez from the rotation right away, but they have to at least be considering it at this point. Chris Leroux added to the pain with a very rough showing in his mop-up role. He walked the first three batters he faced (bringing in two runs) and allowed the D-Backs to put up a 4-spot in the fourth, making the score 10-1 and ending any slim hopes of a big comeback. The offense managed two runs, and the lone positive was probably Starling Marte having another big day. He led off the game with a sharp line drive double for his fifth leadoff hit in a row and later drove in a run with a single in the seventh. SERIES WRAPUP This one was obviously horrible and wipes out some momentum from two good performances in a row, but the Bucs have to be happy taking 2 of 3 from a good club on the road. That said, they’ve got serious concerns in the starting pitching department after Wandy Rodriguez‘s injury (it now appears that he won’t make his next start) and this awful outing from Sanchez. At least the offense showed a pulse. The Bucs are off on Thursday after the long trip home, and then it’s a big weekend series with the Reds at PNC. That will be another test, as Cincinnati is the clear-cut favorite in the division (little has changed in that regard since last season).
