PHOENIX Chris Young was placed on the disabled list with a right shoulder contusion about 45 minutes before the Diamondbacks game against Pittsburgh on Wednesday afternoon. The move was not unexpected after Young, one of the hottest hitters in the National League, ran shoulder-first into the left-center field fence while catching a fly ball in the fourth inning Tuesday night. Young underwent an MRI on Wednesday morning after X-rays Tuesday night showed no broken bones. Were hoping it is quicker rather than longer, D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said in his morning press conference. The D-backs were hoping the MRI revealed a sprain of the AC joint at the top of the shoulder, but no other medical information was immediately available. The move left the D-backs without two of their starting outfielders, as Justin Upton sat out a second day after having fluid removed from the tip of his left thumb. Upton has a bone bruise, and the D-backs still are not ruling out a stint on the disabled list for him. Hes not going to go on the DL today. Well give him a day or so and see if we see any improvement, Gibson said. Despite little production from Upton, the D-backs are second in the NL in home runs and third in runs, but the offense could take a hit with Youngs loss. He was second in the NL in home runs (five) and OPS (1.397), third in batting average (.410) and tied for third in RBIs (13) entering games of Wednesday. He has homered in all three parks he has played in and against all four D-backs opponents this season. Rookie A.J. Pollock made his first major league in center field after being purchased from Class AAA Reno earlier Wednesday. Pollock caught a 6:30 a.m. flight from Fresno, where Reno was playing, and was hitting seventh in the lineup. Pollock, a 2009 first-round draft pick, technically took Geoff Blums spot on the roster after Blum was placed on the disabled list with a strained left oblique muscle suffered during batting practice Tuesday. Infielder Cody Ransom was purchased from Reno to take Youngs roster spot. Ransom was trying to pass kidney stones when he arrived with Pollock in the morning.Follow Jack Magruder on Twitter
