The Diamondbacks on Friday agreed to a new four-year contract with third baseman Martin Prado, the centerpiece of last week's trade that sent Justin Upton to the Braves. FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reported that the total value of the new deal is 40 million, an average of 10 million a year. The 29-year-old Prado would have been a free agent after the upcoming season. D-backs general manager Kevin Towers said at the time of the trade, "This deal is much better if we are able to secure the services of Martin for more than one year." Prado hit .301 with 42 doubles, 10 home runs and 70 RBIs with the Braves in 2012. He led the National League with 60 multi-hit games and ranked fourth in hits and fifth in doubles while playing primarily left field but also some third base and second base. He is a .295 career hitter who has topped .300 in four of the last five seasons. Prado's WAR wins above replacement player, a new-math calculation designed to determine a player's overall worth considering all phases is 12.1 over the last three seasons. Upton's is 10.2 during the same time. Upton was due to make about 13 million this season, so with Prado at approximately 10 million, the D-backs will save roughly 3 million, leaving their total payroll in the 90 million range. The D-backs also received in the deal starter Randall Delgado as well as minor league right-hander Zeke Spruill, shortstop Nick Ahmed and third baseman Brandon Drury in exchange for Upton and third baseman Chris Johnson.
