There were some dominant pitching performances in last night's games. Justin Verlander shut down the A's with 11 strike outs, and the Reds collectively stifled the Giants to get their win. Usually when your starter goes down to injury in the early innings (let alone the first batter) you're in for a wild night. Luckily for the Reds their pitching is phenomenal and they turned in a great outing. Former Padre Mat Latos turned in 4 innings of 1 run ball. He gave up 4 hits, including a Buster Posey home run, but he managed to pitch around all the hits. Today is full of games as the A's and Tigers are playing now, followed by game one of the Nationals and Cardinals. Then later is the Yankees vs Orioles followed by game two of Reds and Giants. Exciting baseball to keep an eye on in between football games today. Verlander solid in Tigers' Game 1 win

DETROIT -- Don't think that a player as competitive as Justin Verlander doesn't know what his postseason record is or what the expectations are of him. In eight postseason starts, Verlander was 3-3 with a 5.57 ERA. Not very Cy Young or MVP-like, even when you consider those first four starts came when he was a rookie in 2006 and was -- in his words -- "gassed"...

Sabermetric-heads and traditionalists can both agree: Justin Verlander is easy pick for AL Cy Young award

Well, if the infatuation (see contest for AL MVP) with the sabermetric ‘Wins Above Replacement’ (WAR) remains consistent, Justin Verlander should be the 2012 American League Cy Young Award Winner. Among other things, Verlander is tops in the American League with a WAR of 7.5. Tampa Bay Rays’ ace David Price is a close second with 6.4. Last season when Verlander won the award...

Justin Verlander Strikes Out 11 Batters in Tigers 3-1 Win Over Athletics in ALDS

DETROIT -- Justin Verlander shut down Oakland after a leadoff homer, and Alex Avila went deep in the fifth inning to lift the Detroit Tigers over the Athletics 3-1 in the opener of their AL playoff Saturday night. Verlander allowed three hits in seven innings and matched his career postseason high with 11 strikeouts. As usual, he seemed stronger in the later innings, striking out...

Verlander overcomes slow start to stymie A's

DETROIT -- Must win? Sure, when Justin Verlander pitches for the Detroit Tigers. "You have to win when Justin in on the mound," catcher Alex Avila said Saturday night after Detroit did indeed win the first game of its best-of-five divisional American League Division Series from the Oakland A's, 3-1. "But they're all 'must win.' It's going...

Verlander Leads the Way as the Tigers Take Game One

On a cold 49 degree October night, the Detroit Tigers opened up their postseason against the Oakland A’s in front of a packed house in downtown Detroit. Justin Verlander got the ball in the first game of the short five game series. Verlander hasn’t had much success over his last three playoff starts. On Saturday night, the Tigers’ ace looked to put his team ahead in the series...

Justin Verlander Guts Out Seven Strong Innings as Detroit Tigers Take Game One From Oakland

Trying to generate some positive momentum, the Detroit Tigers sent their ace out to try and snag game one of the American League Division Series. Though it didn’t exactly go as planned early, Justin Verlander stayed tough through seven strong … Continue reading →

AL Division Series Game One: Tigers 3, A's 1

The Detroit Tigers, led by ace Justin Verlander, beat the Oakland A's 3-1 in game one of the American League Division Series on Saturday night to take a 1-0 series lead. Verlander's evening had a shocking start, as he allowed a lead-off homer to Coco Crisp to send Oakland to a 1-0 lead. But that would really be all for the A's, who never had more than one runner on...

Tigers 3, A's 1

DETROIT -- Justin Verlander played the part of a heavyweight boxing champion Saturday night, taking some early punches before dominating the back end of the fight. The Detroit Tigers ace allowed a home run to Oakland A's center fielder Coco Crisp to begin the game and had thrown 61 pitches through three innings. However, Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera tied the score in...

Game 1 features pitching mismatch

DETROIT (AP) -- A rookie vs. the reigning MVP. That's a fitting way for the Oakland Athletics to start the postseason. The A's will send Jarrod Parker (13-8) to the mound against Detroit ace Justin Verlander (17-8) in Game 1 of the division series Saturday night. The AL Central-champion Tigers are making their second straight playoff appearance, but Oakland emerged as one...

Two Days in Detroit: Craziness at Comerica

It was an eventful weekend in Detroit. The Tigers won the first two games of their ALDS match-up with the Oakland A’s, and the manner in which they did so was pure theater. A lot happened at Comerica Park between six p.m. Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Some of it was predictable — Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander showed why they’re leading candidates to capture the MVP and...

ALDS and NLDS Picks: The Fun And Games Are Over

And no reset button Oakland vs. DETROITHere's the biggest single problem with picking the A's to survive: Justin Verlander. The best starting pitcher in baseball gets the ball in Game One, and while Jarrod Parker is all kinds of tough and talented and ready... he's just, well, not Justin Verlander. So the Tigers are going to win Game One.The second biggest problem for...

Athletics-Tigers Preview

One team has the reigning MVP and another player who just won the Triple Crown. The Oakland Athletics will try to counter all that by sending - who else? - a rookie to the mound. ''We've been the `David' all year,'' A's right-hander Jarrod Parker said. ''I think obviously it's a role and an image that we've kind of taken on and been able...

Ode to Final Eliminated MLB Teams

Time to honor the final four teams eliminated. And while we’re at it, the two booted WildCards. Hats off to you White Sox, Rays, Halos and Dodgers. You came up a buck short. And to the Rangers and Braves it wasn’t meant to be. Opening weekend recap

Hard to believe we’re only 3 days (one weekend) into the MLB playoff season, and to me, the picture is becoming clear. A photo-driven recap of the weekend: On Friday night… Two teams already eliminated, the Braves and Rangers are out. Surprising result given their talent and strong position over the last month. I’ll save the infield fly drama for our other blogs below. But...
