Matt Cain not only threw the first perfect game in Giants history last night, but he did so in dominating fashion, striking out 14 batters in the process. Sandy Koufax is the only pitcher to accumulate that many K's in a perfecto. As rare a feat as a perfect game is (this is the 22nd in MLB history), and as stated, only the 2nd time it was "as" perfect, should we be surprised by it? It's certainly something to behold, but it was Matt Cain. The same Matt Cain who was given the richest contract all time for a right handed pitcher. It should stand to reason that if someone is going to be the highest paid all time at a position, that he should do something extraordinary. Mission accomplished. And as good as his performance was last night, it wasn't the most surprising. The most surprising performance of the night goes to a Mr. R.A. Dickey. Before you jump all over me and my Met's fan bias, hear me out. He didn't walk a batter. That alone is amazing. A knuck...

“Retiring 27 Houston Astros in a row on a cool night in a friendly yard doesn’t prove anything, except that a guy with a hammer for an arm and a deep, cool reservoir inside can make baseball history with a little luck and a little help from...

There's an old Peanuts comic strip that I think about often. It's an old Sunday strip and, in it, Linus comes running out of his house due to sheer excitement. As he breathlessly explains to Charlie Brown, he has just witnessed the most amazing, improbable comeback in football history. It wasn't the famous Stanford "Band...
Matt Cain delivered the 22nd perfect game in major league history on Wednesday night. But could it be the best pitching performance ever? That's the question some are asking following Cain's perfection. In addition to not allowing a runner to reach base, Cain struck out 14 and didn't fall behind 2-0 to any of the 27 hitters he faced. The K total matches Sandy Koufax&...
Matt Cain threw the first perfect game in Giants history, and second of the 2012 season, while striking out 14 Astros in the win.
Matt Cain's perfect game led to a night of celebration for the Giants, and one player even got hurt trying to enjoy things. Settle down there.
Make no mistake about it, Matt Cain's perfect game against the Astros was a great piece of work. It was the 22nd in major league baseball history and the second in which I have been part of the telecast. It just couldn't match the first one for several reasons.
My first perfect game telecast had the team I was working with win. Kenny Rogers of the Texas Rangers blanked the...
In a stunning performance San Francisco Giants starter Matt Cain tossed the first perfect game in franchise history tonight, winning 10-0 against the Houston Astros at AT&T Park.Cain threw 125 pitches, 86 of which were strikes, to record the 22nd perfect game in Major League Baseball history. San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain threw the 22nd perfect game in Major League Baseball history (and the first in San Francisco Giants history) in a 10-0 over the Houston Astros.
It was the second perfect game this year behind the White Sox Phillip Humber as Cain struck out a career-high 14 along the way- 7 looking and 7 swinging.
It's always said that games like Cain...
Wednesday night, San Francisco Giants was perfect on the mound against the Houston Astros. Cain also struck out 14 Astros in the Giants' 10-0, tied for the most strikeouts in a perfect game.
Cain's perfect game marks the 22nd in MLB history and the second of the 2012 season. Philip Humber tossed a perfect game on April 21st against the Seattle Mariners.
Matt Cain threw a perfect game Wednesday night, the first one in the 128-year history of the Giants franchise. Just moments after the game ended, Dave Cameron provided some historical context on Cain’s pitching performance, looking at the highest GameScores in baseball history. I’ve had a bit more time for reflection.
If you read my posts regularly, you know I’m a Giants fan...
As I'd hope you know by now, the San Francisco Giants' Matt Cain threw a perfect game against the Houston Astros on Wednesday night at AT&T Park. He becomes just the 22nd pitcher in MLB history to toss a perfecto. So... it's kind of a big deal. And he owes a huge, huge thanks to Giants' right fielder Gregor Blanco, who played the role of Dewayne Wise, by making...
As golfer Dustin Johnson crushed drives from home plate over the
right-field wall and into San Francisco Bay, pitcher Matt Cain and
manager Bruce Bochy glanced at each other before looking into the
stands for approval from Giants general manager Brian Sabean.
Anytime there is a no hitter, or better yet, a perfect game, it seems like there’s a great catch that saves the day. Gregor Blanco is the one who helped save Matt Cain’s perfect game on Wednesday night.

What he did: I've been writing this column for two years, and for two years, Matt Cain has been a potential perfect subject. In part, this column has been about taking men whose stats may have suffered due to their career circumstances. I've looked at hitters like Jim Wynn and Bob Watson who might have been Hall of Famers had they not played in the Astrodome of the 1960s...
