He's [Brian Bogusevic] been the Joe Mather of camp so far – Dale Sveum I'm pretty sure Dale Sveum meant this as a compliment, but saying someone is the Joe Mather of anything is kind of the opposite. I'll just repost what I already did about Mather. Joe Mather was the worst player in baseball last year. Baseball Reference only thought he was the 5th worst player in baseball. In four seasons in the big leagues, Joe Mather has been a replacement level player or better only once according to both Fangraphs and Baseball Reference. That was in 2008. I'm confused because a few weeks ago Dale Sveum said that Brent Lillibridge could be the Joe Mather of spring training. The post Dale Sveum tries to compliment someone appeared first on Obstructed View.

Prospect Nation 2013: #2 LHP Adam Morgan

Lefty hurler Adam Morgan progressed more than any other Phillies prospect over the past year.  Drafted in the third round in 2011 out of the University of Alabama, Morgan quickly made an impact in the Phils’ system upon debuting as a pro, and only sped up his progress last season when he became a force on the pitching mound. After posting a 3-3 record with a 2.01 ERA in 11 starts...

Stark: The Next Era of Phillies Baseball is Coming

The championship era could be coming to a close. On Wednesday afternoon ESPN.com Senior writer, Jayson Stark, joined 97.5 The Fanatic’s Mike Missanelli and the two had what I believe to be the preeminent conversation regarding the Phillies recent history and wondered how fans would handle the end of this great era: Stark: “The next era is coming, how soon it arrives is up to...

Roy Halladay’s velocity could be a concern

Roy Halladay is one of the most accomplished pitchers in the majors, but his velocity will likely be a concern this season and moving forward. Halladay turns 36 in May. He missed time last season with a lat injury, and he experienced shoulder problems that he attributed to a back issue. Though he pitched extremely well in April, he struggled in May before going on the disabled list...

Things Dale Sveum says

May as well make this a series. On Cubs.com now is a piece about Javier Baez and it has this money quote from Dale Sveum. MESA, Ariz. — Javier Baez found out in one day just how much he still has to learn. One of the Cubs' top prospects, Baez played in an early Wednesday "B" game against the Rangers and then went 0-for-3 in Chicago's Cactus League game in Surprise...

Chase Utley and Purpose Pitches

Chase Utley gets hit by a lot of pitches. Pretty much always been that way. Over his career, about 8% of the time Utley has reached base, he’s reached base on a hit-by-pitch. He led the league in hit-by-pitches for three consecutive years between 2007-2009. Utley ranks fourth among active players in career hit-by-pitches, and he ranks 21st all-time, sneaking up quickly on Brady...

Anthony Rizzo and the Italians get to keep playing

With today’s declaration of war between Canada and Mexico, won by the Canadian side (who has already apologized numerous times for Bryan Adams), Team Italy has advanced to the second round of the World Baseball Classic.  Here’s a summary of the skirmishes from World War Que/Eh: The HBT team made a good observation, illustrating one of the inherent flaws of the WBC pool ranking...

Young completes community service

By May, as long as Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Delmon Young remains on good behavior, his name will be cleared. Young, 27, was charged with a hate crime last April after he shouted an anti-semitic slur while intoxicated, according to the New York City Police Department. He pleaded guilty to aggravated harassment and as part of the plea, agreed to serve 10 days of community...

Wrigley is Magic

I find myself waffling on this subject quite a bit, because as all Cubs fans do, I just want the best for the Cubs.  I want them to win, and to do that I want them to be able to make truckloads of money.  There are many obstacles preventing the Cubs from making as much money as they should given the brand name recognition, the history (most of it crap, but you know, we’re committed...
