Tampa Bay Rays LHP David Price suffered triceps tightness on his throwing arm in the third inning of Wednesday’s game, a major blow to a team struggling to hang on the back of the pack of a competitive AL East. The reigning Cy Young Award winner has been off to a tough start at 1-4 with a 5.24 ERA. For reference, Price was 20-5 with a 2.54 ERA last season. Price walked off the field holding his left arm, according to Bill Chastain of MLB.com.
The Rays move to 20-19 after Price’s loss to the Boston Red Sox, but are in fourth place behind a New York Yankees team getting healthier by the week, and talented Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox teams who don’t figure to fade this summer. They can’t afford to lose their ace for any extended period of time.
It’s unclear the extent of the injury, follow Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (@TBTimes_Rays) for the latest.
