Based on how Carlos Delgado is playing right now, you've got to to believe him. Those two home runs he hit in last night's 6-3 win over the Phillies -- both off Cole Hamels -- were ridiculous. The first one, a 400-foot blast, smashed into the rightfield scoreboard. The second soared over the Mets' bullpen, at second-deck level, and vanished somewhere into the parking lot. That checked in at an estimated 460 feet. Yikes.
Afterward, here's what Delgado had to say about the Mets' resiliency this season, and the road ahead with a two-game lead over the Phillies with 19 to go:
"We think we're as good as anybody," Delgado said. "We think we're the team to beat - that what happened last year is not going to happen again. And we're very confident that we can get this done. It's definitely a different atmosphere, a different feeling than we had last year."
Oh, and about that whole MVP thing. Say what you want about the rest of the NL, but Delgado is the MVP of this Mets team. That's not even open to debate anymore. So if you wanted to consider David Wright or Jose Reyes for the NL MVP, Delgado has leapfrogged over them. And if you don't think that's the case, you haven't been watching the games.
-- On June 27, the Mets were in third place in the NL East,four games out with a 38-39 record.
-- Since then, they are 42-24 (.636), in first place and two games up on the Phillies.
-- Here's what Delgado has done over those 66 games:
.299 BA, .390 OBP, .627 SLG, 22 HRs, 65 RBI. The home runs and RBI, by the way, are the most in the majors during that period.
Pretty strong case and getting stronger, if you ask me.
