Found January 13, 2009 on Dom D's Mets Fan Blog:

At one time it appeared that free agent starter Derek Lowe was a lock to take the mound in Citi Field as a member of the Mets.

However, all that has changed since Derek Lowe choose to sign with the division rival, Atlanta Braves.

The Mets and Lowe's agent Scott Boras could not come to terms on a contract.

This enabled the Braves to swoop in and sign their new ace.

The deal will pay Lowe $60 million over the next four seasons.

Now the Mets will turn to free agents Oliver Perez and Randy Wolf in hopes of finding a new starter to fill the No. 2 spot in the rotation.
