As part of the long-tenured agreement between MLB and the MLBPA, last night 142 players eligible filed for salary arbitration. Last year, there were 137. The process of exchanging salary figures occurs Jan. 17, with hearings running from Feb. 1-21 in St. Petersburg, FL. Players and clubs can negotiate salaries right up to a scheduled hearing. Customarily, a flurry of signings will occur just before salary figures are exchanged as those numbers drive the mid-point between them, the spot where negotiations then become more focused. Notable first-time salary arb players include Pablo Sandoval, David Price, Gio Gonzalez, and Jordan Zimmermann (Price Gonzalez and Zimmerman are Super Two status), Mike Napoli, B.J. Upton, Hunter Pence, Cole Hamels, Russell Martin, Joba Chamberlain, Nyjer Morgan, Andre Ethier, Clayton Kershaw, James Loney, and Tim Lincecum.
