Diamond Notes is Players View’s weekly digest of all things MLB. Matt DeMello weighs in on weak starts, strong starts and the plight of Reds manager Dusty Baker.
After the first week the Dodgers, Nationals and Blue Jays are all in first place, while the Angels, Red Sox and Marlins are all in last. I would caution against excitement or dismay at this point, however.
The Dodgers have beaten up on some pretty bad teams (San Diego and Pittsburgh), the Blue Jays are in the toughest division in baseball and the Nationals have been very lucky thus far.
On the far side, the Marlins have been flat and with the swirling controversy of Ozzie’s love for Fidel Castro the tumult has definitely had an effect.
The Angels have one of the top three pitching staffs in baseball, they’ll get back on track, it’s early.

Ellsbury's shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for a minimum of six weeks (Tlumacki/ Boston Globe)
Sometimes, hard slides just aren’t worth the risk.
Efforts to disrupt a defender, whether he’s the pivot man on a double play or just an infielder trying to make a throw, are an everyday part of baseball. And while aggressive play can be fun to watch, it can also...
BOSTON –– Che-Hsuan Lin was a late scratch for Friday's lineup at Triple-A Pawtucket. Now, there's an explanation for the move. On the heels of Jacoby Ellsbury's injury, the Taiwanese outfielder received his first promotion to the big leagues. He will provide reinforcement to an outfield headed by Cody Ross, Darnell McDonald and Ryan Sweeney. "They didn't...
Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, the best position player in the American League last year, likely will miss at least six weeks after suffering a subluxation of his right shoulder.
Giants closer Brian Wilson, the top closer in baseball two years ago, appears headed for season-ending elbow surgery.
This may surprise you, but neither star's injury is as catastrophic to...
April 14, 2012: Matt Kemp went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-1 victory over the San Diego Padres. He’s now batting .457 with five home runs and 15 RBI this season.
Line: 4 AB | 2 R | 3 H | 4 RBI
My fantasy perspective: Kemp is off to a tremendous start, leading the Major Leagues in all Triple Crown categories. Toss in 12 runs...
BOSTON –– The injury to Jacoby Ellsbury has heightened the urgency for Carl Crawford to return. But after rushing his rehab –– and suffering a setback –– to in spring training, the outfielder can't accelerate the process. While he intends to follow the training staff's protocol, he's anxious to help absorb the blow of Ellsbury's injury. "I definitely...
In a pretty terrible turn of evens on Opening Day at Fenway, Jacoby Ellsbury was forced to leave the game following a collision at 2nd base. It didn't look good so keep your fingers crossed, folks.
From RedSox.com BOSTON -- The Red Sox are looking outside the organization for outfield help, baseball sources confirmed to MLB.com on Sunday. One source cautioned, however, that teams often do not want to unload players this time of year.Jacoby Ellsbury's partially dislocated right shoulder -- an injury the Red Sox still do not know the extent of -- and Carl Crawford's...
Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine suddenly faces quite the predicament now that Jacoby Ellsbury will be sidelined. Valentine has to decide who to use in the leadoff spot -- the spot in the order typically designated for the speedy Ellsbury. Mike Aviles got the nod in that spot on Saturday, but Valentine could elect to switch things up based on matchups. As NESN's Peter Gammons...
Through the first ten games of the year (which by my calculations, is about 6% of the entire season), the kings of baseball reside in Los Angeles. Not in Orange County, like many expected coming into the year, but at Chavez Ravine, where the Dodgers are 9-1. Featuring stars like Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw, the Dodgers are running roughshod on the league early on. Well...they...
With Boston Red Sox centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury heading to the disabled list, it's quite possible that we could get another round of Linsanity but obviously not from Jeremy Lin.
Instead, it'll be Che-Hsuan Lin who will be called up from the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com who confirmed the news through Lin's agent.
Ellsbury just tweeted...
