For the second straight start, Ian Kennedy looked ready to start on opening day. The Arizona ace pitched seven strong innings against a Chicago Cubs split squad for a 3-2 win on Monday. ''I was disappointed in the walks I gave up but I felt pretty happy how my stuff is coming along, ''Kennedy said. '' I got the pitch count up, that is why I went out in the seventh inning, to try and get it up because I was making contact early and getting quick outs.'' He walked two, allowing a run and five hits with four strikeouts. In Kennedy's last two outings he has given up just one run and 10 hits in 11 innings. ''I am happy with the way things have come along,'' Kennedy said. ''Spring training is trying to get ready for the season. It is nice to go seven today.'' Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo home run for the Diamondbacks and Justin Upton hit two doubles. Closer J.J. Putz pitched a perfect ninth for the save. ''T...

D-backs notebook: Roberts' starting job secure

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson on Monday seemed to suggest the situation at third base might not be as clear cut as it appeared when asked if Ryan Roberts and Geoff Blum might share time there, but Gibson's comments Tuesday cleared things up. "Ryan Roberts is my third baseman," Gibson said when asked if the situation at third base might be fluid...

D-backs' Collmenter looks like his old self

PEORIA, Ariz. Josh Collmenter looked and felt like himself Sunday, justifying manager Kirk Gibsons earlier decision to assure him a spot in the starting rotation while seeming to allay Gibsons fears about lingering health issues. Collmenter gave up two runs in five innings in the Diamondbacks 4-3 loss to San Diego at the Peoria Sports Complex, both his most effective and longest...

D-backs notebook: Win over Cubs a throwback

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Diamondbacks 3-2 victory over the Cubs on Monday was a throwback. Ian Kennedy was effective and efficient, Justin Upton had two doubles and drove in a run, Paul Goldschmidt homered and J.J. Putz closed it out with a save. As sharp as he has been all spring, Kennedy gave up one run and five hits while becoming the first D-backs starter to go seven innings...

Corbin continues push onto D-backs' radar

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Diamondbacks' game against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday provided a perfect "only-in-spring-training" moment when D-backs starter Patrick Corbin was removed from the game after throwing five hitless innings. The outing was just the latest and most impressive performance from the 22-year-old left-hander. While he has flown under the radar...

2012 season preview: Arizona Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks completed a miraculous transformation from 2010 to 2011, going from last in the division to first. Their attack was led by a good, young starting rotation, and a potent offense led by MVP candidate Justin Upton. GM Kevin Towers tinkered with his team this offseason, and manager Kirk Gibson has an extremely talented young squad that is looking to repeat as NL West...

Justin Upton Player Projection No. 15

Key Stats: Justin Upton’s strikeout rate went down by 9% last season while he actually gained power. Upton was called up at age 19 and this is a classic case of a player developing at the Major League level. The decrease in strikeouts resulted in a 16 point gain in his average. Skeptics Say: On the road last year Upton hit just .246 with an OPS of .767. Certainly ordinary numbers...

Arizona legislators again say yes to free tickets

It's been a year since the Fiesta Bowl scandal embarrassed legislators, but at least some Arizona lawmakers still like their freebies. The Arizona Diamondbacks have offered free tickets to legislators for the baseball team's first game of the season, and a team executive says at least 40 of the 90 state senators and representatives have accepted so far. The Fiesta Bowl...

Corbin lifts D-backs to win over Rockies

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Patrick Corbin has pitched extremely well this spring, and it probably won't be enough to make Arizona's opening-day roster. Corbin tossed five hitless innings to lift the Diamondbacks to a 7-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. The left-hander struck out three and walked two while lowering his spring ERA to 0.57. "The first two...

Season Preview: Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks were the biggest surprise division winner in baseball last season.  From April to October they established themselves as a complete team, with a lineup that can hit, base runners that can steal, a rotation that can win, and a bullpen that can close.  This led to a 94-68 record, eight games ahead of the previous
