Matt Davidson of the Arizona Diamondbacks hit a two-run homer and the United States beat the World Team 4-2 on Sunday in the All-Star Futures Game, baseball's annual showcase for top minor league prospects.
The opening event for three days of All-Star festivities at Citi Field, the Futures Game certainly had a New York Mets flavor to it in the team's home ballpark. Two of the club's touted pitching prospects, Rafael Montero and Noah Syndergaard, started on the mound and each worked a scoreless inning.
Miami's Christian Yelich and Boston's Garin Cecchini each had an RBI double. Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Jesse Biddle earned the win and Washington right-hander A.J. Cole got a save.
Davidson, selected the game's MVP, connected off losing pitcher Michael Ynoa of the Oakland Athletics. Chicago Cubs second baseman Arismendy Alcantara homered for the World team off Red Sox right-hander Anthony Ranaudo.
BEST OF MAXIM
Tyler Skaggs is in an interesting place in his baseball career. It seems to happen to many youngsters, often times more so to pitchers. Skaggs is in a weird little spot where he’s outgrown the minor leagues, but hasn’t shown the type of performance in the majors consistently enough to justify his unconditional stay with the big league club.
It’s no secret that Ian Kennedy has struggled in the first half, carrying a 5.42 ERA, good for second worst among National League starters, into the All-Star break. But following his loss on Sunday to the Brewers, manager Kirk Gibson was asked about the rotation’s order heading into the second half. Per Arizona Sports 620′s Kyndra de St. Aubin, Gibson will use Kennedy in the...
With 40 percent of their starting rotation down, the Diamondbacks will be excited to get at least half of their injured starters back soon, as Brandon McCarthy is set to begin rehabbing later this week. Jack Magruder reported it on Twitter Sunday morning, saying manager Kirk Gibson wants to see at least two starts before his return to the big leagues.
PHOENIX -- When Kirk Gibson makes a mound visit, it usually is to make a pitching change. This one was to make a point. Strongly.
Gibson looked Ian Kennedy in the eye and delivered a message that lip readers might not want to pass along to their children when he went out in the second inning Sunday, after Kennedy had permitted seven of the Brewers' first 12 batters to reach...
PHOENIX The Arizona Diamondbacks have raised 705,395 in support of the families of the 19 firefighters who perished fighting the Yarnell fire as well as members of the community who have been affected by the fires.
The money was raised in various fundraising efforts that began two days after the June 30 tragedy and throughout the D-backs 10-game homestand. The funds raised throughout...
While there were many good individual performances, no organization had more impressive showings from their group of prospects than the Arizona Diamondbacks did at today’s All-Star Futures Game at Citi Field.
There is probably no more exciting defensive play in baseball than a diving, feet off the ground, parallel to the ground catch. Throw in bases-loaded, 2 outs, in a 2-1 game in the 8th inning and just watch it all unfold as A.J. Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Trevor Cahill, who has been on the disabled list since July 1 with a hip contusion and recent shoulder soreness, threw 20 pitches in a bullpen session on Thursday and "felt pretty good."
As reported by Steve Gilbert of MLB.com,
"Cahill said, ""t's the first time I've taken multiple days off during the season, so...
The long road back to the mound for Brandon McCarthy, appears to finally have an end in sight. The lanky right-hander will report to Triple-A Reno this weekend, to make the first of at least two projected rehab starts after being out of action since May 31st, with shoulder inflammation.
After successfully completing a 65-pitch simulated game on Sunday, the next step on the agenda...
The former 21 game winner has definitely had a roller coaster of a first half. After another disappointing outing against Milwaukee yesterday, he is 3-6 with a 5.42 ERA. Typically selected somewhere between rounds 10-12 in drafts during the preseason, Kennedy's numbers are just unacceptable to this point. Control, or lack thereof, is the main issue of concern. So far, his BB...
PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks have beaten the Brewers this weekend they way they have worked their way to the top of the NL West this season -- with a twist.
As has happened, they fell behind early. They rallied. And, new to this series, they navigated the final innings with a situational bullpen that has adapted well.
The result: a 5-4 victory at Chase Field that supplied further...
Almost get blown up, Randy Johnson Style
Didi Gregorius hit one of Arizona's three solo home runs and drove in the tying run during a three-run seventh inning and the Diamondbacks rallied to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 on Saturday night.
Miguel Montero and Jason Kubel also went deep and Eric Chavez drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the go-ahead run for the Diamondbacks, who have won three straight overall and...
So, work conspired against me this week and I’m a day late, but hopefully not a dollar short. We haven’t seen any huge trades yet, but as we head into the All-Star break, we could start to see some movement as teams look to solidify the pen with a run into October as the goal. We’ve got a lot of quick hitters below so let’s dive right in.
What a streaky team these Diamondbacks are. With Saturday night’s 5-4 win over the Brewers, the Snakes have now won three straight following their sweep at the hand of the Dodgers, which followed a five game win streak. The win was their 26th comeback victory of the year, second in the National League only to the Braves.
