Eric Chavez has signed a contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Chavez signed a one-year deal worth $3 million on Wednesday. He spent last season with the New York Yankees.
The Diamondbacks have Chris Johnson at third base but Chavez may move into a platoon role. He replaced Alex Rodriguez at times last season, most notably the playoffs, and finished with a .281/.348/.496 line. Chavez also hit 16 home runs which suggests there is still pop in his bat.
When the Yankees announced Alex Rodriguez would miss the start of the 2013 season, it was assumed they would make an effort to re-sign Chavez. Boston was among a handful of teams also interested in signing the 15 year veteran.

BACK ON THE PROWL
Yankees shortstop and renowned ladykiller Derek Jeter allegedly was spotted with swimsuit model Hannah Davis, an old flame, in a New York hotel bar on Monday night.
The third base market continues to clear. Eric Chavez is now off the market, as the Diamondbacks signed the veteran to a one-year, $3 million deal Wednesday.
As the contract suggests, Chavez is unlikely to be a full-time player in Arizona. However, given the myriad struggles the club experienced at third base last season, we can expect Chavez to play a significant role. He hit .281...
WHO'S THE BOSS?
Yankees GM Brian Cashman reportedly lacked the authority to make any offers to free agents at the winter meetings without consulting team ownership first.
Derek Eater? Well that didn’t last very long.
Yankee fans woke up on Friday morning to a horrifying sight, Derek Jeter significantly overweight on the back page of the New York Post. The Post’s report stated that Jeter had “turned to the fork” and lost control of his weight during rehab on his injured left ankle.
The report, however, was proven false when MLB Network tweeted...
Derek Jeter says his surgically repaired left ankle feels good and he expects to be the New York Yankees' starting shortstop on opening day.
Jeter was at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night to surprise more than 500 children from New York City at his Turn 2 Foundation's holiday party. It was his first public visit to the Bronx since having surgery in late October to repair...
Unfortunately, the best news to come out of the winter meetings so far is that Derek Jeter believes he should be ready for Opening Day. Jeter, 38, who was criticized last week for being "out of shape" after a picture was taken of him walking down the street with a bit of a gut, says he feels good and that he is moving around a lot better after recovering from ankle surgery...
Catcher Wil Nieves and the Arizona Diamondbacks have completed their $800,000, one-year contract.
The sides agreed to the deal Wednesday but Nieves needed to pass a physical. The Diamondbacks announced the signing on Thursday.
The 35-year-old Nieves, who wasn't tendered a contract by Arizona last week, batted .306 with a home run and three RBIs in 16 games for the D-backs in...
NASHVILLE Kevin Towers may have started a trend when he united Oakland and Florida in the three-team trade Oct. 20 that brought Heath Bell to the Diamondbacks, got cash relief for the Marlins and sent Chris Young to the As.
Multi is the new normal.
How many trade balls are in the air?
Right now? Towers said late Tuesday afternoon.
Probably more than I have hands. But I have...
Two third basemen have signed contracts with teams other than the Phillies, limiting the team's options. First, Eric Chavez agreed to terms with the Arizona Diamondbacks on a one-year contract. Second, Jeff Keppinger agreed to terms with the Chicago White Sox on a three-year contract. I had earlier hoped for...
Aaron Hill re-broke out with his 2012 performance for the Arizona Diamondbacks. After two very disappointing seasons, he really put it together, establishing himself once again as a top second baseman. He only hails to Brandon Phillips in all of the NL; but at this point, he should be ranked ahead of the likes of Dan Uggla, Neil Walker and Chase Utley. He had an...
