Daisuke Matsuzaka took the mound for the Sox today after spending a year rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Dice-K has always been an enigma on the mound, so most were not sure what we would get from him. Dice-K ended up coming away with the loss, however I think there were many more positive in there than concerns.
Dice-K gave up his first run in the 2nd inning with a solo leadoff HR to LaRoche. Dice-K gave up the rest of his runs in the 4th inning. Dice-K gave up his only walk of the game to Bryce Harper. That was followed by a single to Zimmerman where Harper went to third with no outs. Dice-K gave up a double and a single and 3 runs scored. The Sox got out of the inning with a double play that was started by Gonzo making a great sliding play in RF. The damage was done. I know allowing 4 runs to score cannot be considered a good performance, but I can't help wanting to describe it that way. Dice-K has always had command issues and for the most part, that was not t...

The Boston Red Sox have activated right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka from the 60-day disabled list Saturday to start against the Washington Nationals.
Matsuzaka is making his first major league start since having last season cut short after elbow reconstructive surgery last June 10.
To make room, the Red Sox designated outfielder Marlon Byrd for assignment.
Byrd appeared in 34 games...
BOSTON -- After a yearlong absence, Daisuke Matsuzaka made his triumphant return to Fenway Park. This was supposed to be different. With a new manager and coaching staff, there was an assumption the Red Sox starter would produce better results. With a year away -- after Tommy John surgery -- from the spotlight, this was his moment to start over. And yet, Matsuzaka was once again...
Three hundred and sixty-four days after undergoing Tommy John surgery, Red Sox fans will finally get a look at a newly healed Daisuke Matsuzaka. The righty, who was perhaps the most hyped Sox signing in decades, has spent the past few months rehabbing his arm and experiencing various complications along the way. But at long last, Matsuzaka will make his return to the mound against...
8 a.m. ET: For the first time in over a year, Daisuke Matsuzaka will take the mound for the Red Sox (29-29) and it will be against the Nationals (33-23). Matsuzaka's start will be just a day shy of the one-year anniversary of when he underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. It'll mark his first start since May 16, 2011, when he yielded five runs to the Orioles. The...
Daisuke Matsuzaka's return from Tommy John surgery - one day shy of the one-year anniversary of his procedure - was by many accounts positive. He worked 5 innings allowing 4 runs on 5 hits and just 1 walk while striking out 8. His velocity looked good; he topped out at 93 mph on his fastball. That 1 walk was costly, however, as it led to a 3-run outburst by the Nationals...
BOSTON –– When Bobby Valentine was hired in December, there was an assumption that he had an advantage. As a manager who speaks Japanese –– after living there and managing in the Nippon Professional League –– Valentine had the potential to coach and motivate Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka in ways that former skipper Terry Francona couldn't. On the eve of Matsuzaka...
BOSTON -- Making his first major league start one day shy of a year since he had Tommy John surgery, Red Sox right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched five strong innings, but was outdueled by Nationals left-hander Gio Gonzalez, as Washington won, 4-2, for the second consecutive game in Boston. Matsuzaka, who admitted to nerves, gave up four runs on five hits and a walk with eight...
The Red Sox could be excused for looking confused against Washington Nationals starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg on Friday. For one, Strasburg has come into his own this season as one of the most dominant pitchers in Major League Baseball, racking up 92 strikeouts with a 1.04 WHIP in just 71 innings thus far. Also, the Red Sox had never faced Strasburg and his arsenal of hard stuff...
Carl Crawford hasn't seen the field at all this season for the Red Sox. That could be changing soon, and it looks like his rehab is coming along quite smoothly. The speedy outfielder started a throwing regiment on Friday and has been taking batting practice for about a week. At this point, it's only a matter of time before he starts making his way through rehab assignments...
With Daisuke Matsuzaka returning to the Boston Red Sox rotation on Saturday, the team had to clear a roster spot for him not only on the 25-man roster but also on the 40-man roster. The reason being is that the Red Sox had placed Dice-K on the 60-Day DL to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Scott Podsednik.
After the game, Alex Speier of WEEI.com via Twitter reported that...
With Daniel Bard down in Triple-A trying to figure things out with his mechanics, the Boston Red Sox turned to Daisuke Matsuzaka to take his place. And with Dice-K returning to the hill for the first time in a year after undergoing Tommy John surgery, no one quite knew what to expect from him.
Would we see the Dice-K who's been dominating on the mound or would we see the...
