The Boston Red Sox traded shortstop Marco Scutaro to the Colorado Rockies this weekend, just days after the deal appeared dead. Boston sent Scutaro to Colorado for Clayton Mortensen, technically. But the stronger feeling is that the only reason the Red Sox made this deal was so that it would fee up $6 million dollars in salary in an effort to go out and sign free agent pitcher Roy Oswalt. Otherwise, the move makes little sense. After all, the Sox already traded Jed Lowrie this past offseason to the Houston Astros for Mark Melancon. That move was not as questionable, as the team wanted to bolster the back end of its’ bullpen, especially after Jonathan Papelbon departed as a free agent to the Philadelphia Phillies. This was also before they acquired Andrew Bailey to be the new closer, and they announced that Daniel Bard will transform into a starting pitcher and join the rotation for the upcoming 2012 MLB season.
