Much ink was been spilled over the Jays struggles in the pen last season. Fans point to the excessive number of  blown saves as evidence that the closer tandem of Rauch and Fransisco was a failure, not realizing that blown saves can result from giving up the lead in the 7th or 8th innings. Still, the Jays pen wasn’t a strength last season, and it’s expected that they should pursue a closer in the offseason. The signing of Papelbon for $12.5 million per year has set the market for closers, and the Jays aren’t expected to pay anything near that price for one. And with good reason, as closers simply aren’t valuable enough to justify spending $10+ million on. So if the Jays aren’t going to spend the big bucks, how will they acquire a closer?
