The 2011 Rule 5 draft is set for December 8th, tomorrow is the deadline to protect eligible players from the draft. Two of the Dodgers more notable eligibles, Scott Van Slyke and Alfredo Silverio were recently added to the Dodgers 40 man roster. This should not come as surprise to most as both players had huge years in 2011 as members of the Lookouts.

Alright, so what is this Rule 5 draft that everyone keeps talking about?

It works similar to the June Rule 4 or amateur draft, the selection order of the teams is based on each team's win-loss record from the prior regular season. Any player selected during the Rule 5 is immediately added to his new team's 40-man roster.

All players selected in the Rule 5 draft must be kept on the new team's 25-man major league roster for the entire season after the draft. He may not at any time be optioned or designated for assignment. However, the selecting team may waive the Rule 5 draftee. If a Rule 5 draftee clears waivers by not signing with a new MLB team, he must be offered back to the original team, effectively canceling the Rule 5 draft choice. Once a Rule 5 draftee spends an entire season on his new team's 25-man roster, his status falls back to that of the standard rules, no longer under the Rule 5 rules.

Alright, so the next question is who is eligible? Well to be eligible players can not be on a major league 40-man roster and:
  • were signed at age 19 or older and have been in the organization for four years; or
  • were signed at age 18 or younger and have been in the organization for five years.
Okay, so now all that is out of the way let's talk about the Dodgers in this years draft.

The Dodgers 40 man roster is currently at 36 including free agents Matt Treanor, Mark Ellis, Juan Rivera, there isn't much room at all for other minor leaguers to be added, especially when you factor in the rest of the free agent signings that need to happen. That being said, the Dodgers have a can create a little more wiggle room if needed if the Dodgers decide to remove some marginal players from their roster like Trent Oeltjen, Dana Eveland, and Ramon Troncoso. Here's a quick preview on some players that could still be added.

Here are the players who are eligible for the 2011 Rule 5 draft. These players are: Ethan Martin, Kyle Russell, Tony Delmonico, Jon Michael Redding, Cole St. Clair, Nick Buss, Jordan Roberts, Chris Withrow, Austin Gallagher, Andres Santiago, Chris Jacobs, Josh Wall, Griff Erickson, Justin Miller, Tim Sexton, Jaime Pedroza, Matt Wallach, David Pfeiffer, Jessie Mier,  Pedro Baez, Geison Aguasviva, Rafael Ynoa, Carlos Frias, Bladimir Franco, Ramon Jean, Jose Dominguez, Daniel Tamares, Carlie Mirabal, Pedro Guerrero, Elian Herrera, Christian Lara, Alberto Bastardo, Josh Walter, Steve Smith, Joseph Becker, and Robert Booth.

Some names you know, some you don't. So who is going to be added to roster before the freeze? Well here is the rundown on how I think things will play out. First, the Dodgers will designate Oeltjen and Eveland for assignment, thus leaving 6 open spots on the 40 man roster. The Dodgers need at least 3 spots for free agents, that leaves room 3 possible additions. First and foremost let's get the two must adds out of the way, Ethan Martin, and Chris Withrow. The third spot will likely go to Josh Wall, Tony Delmonico, Kyle Russell, or Austin Gallagher. Dodgers GM Ned Colletti certainly has some work to do, it will be interesting to see what route he decides to go.
