The Dodgers have activated OF/1B Juan Rivera from the disabled list. Rivera has been on the disabled list since May 9 after he ruptured a tendon in his left hamstring. In his return to the Dodgers, he'll split time backing up first baseman James Loney and corner outfielders Bobby Abreu and Andre Ethier. Before going on the shelf, Rivera was hitting .247/.276/.358 and third on the team in RBI's, with 14.

Scott Van Slyke was optioned back to Triple-A Albuquerque to make room for Rivera. Van Slyke, who we certainly have not seen the last of, had his share of struggles in his first taste of the show. Van Slyke hit a measly .194/.219/.355, with 6 runs batted in, but he also got his first career home run in his first 31 at-bats as a Major League Baseball player. Van Slyke has shown a lot more potential than his buddy Jerry Sands so far this season, and I'm sure he will be getting another call soon. In the meantime, Van Slyke will look to get regular playing time at AAA, rather than spend wasteful time on the bench. Smart move by the Dodgers decision makers.

The Dodgers have only won three out of the last ten games, losing four at home alone to the Milwaukee Brewers. The Dodgers find themselves in their first real slump of the 2012 campaign. Hopefully Rivera's return will catapult this offense a bit, especially when it comes to RBI's and runners in scoring position, something Rivera has done very well this season. Rivera is hitting .280 with one home run with runners in scoring position.
