In the midst of the bad news of losing 18 of their last 24 games, the Los Angeles Dodgers got some relatively good news on Monday: The MRI on Chad Billingsley's right elbow showed nothing new.

Billingsley complained of elbow soreness on Saturday, something he said had bothered him for several starts. An MRI on Sunday showed elbow inflammation, and a second MRI Monday confirmed it.

Billingsley was scratched on Sunday, forcing Chris Capuano and Nathan Eovaldi to move up a day in the starting rotation and pitch on Sunday and Monday, respectively. The Dodgers' starter Tuesday is yet to be announced, but it likely won't be Billingsley.

"I'm doubting that he'll be the guy tomorrow," manager Don Mattingly said of Billingsley after Monday's game. "We were happy with the MRI results, but we don't want to push the panic button with him."

Mattingly also said Billingsley might only have to miss one start. Billingsley, who last pitched on July 7, could be placed on the disabled list retroactively and be activated to pitch in St. Louis on July 23 or 24.

Though the Dodgers haven't yet announced their Tuesday starting pitcher, right-hander Stephen Fife was scratched from his scheduled Monday start for Triple-A Albuquerque. Fife, who is on the 40-man roster, could be the temporary fill-in for Billingsley.

That Billingsley announced his elbow soreness on Saturday when Dr. Frank Jobe, pioneer of Tommy John surgery, was honored at Dodger Stadium was a coincidental reminder that things could have been a lot worse for Billingsley.
