The Dodgers have claimed outfield Matt Angle off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles. The Dodgers moved Rubby De La Rosa to the 60 day disabled list to make room for Angle. This creates another roster predicament for the four remaining Dodger players that are out of options. Scott Elbert, A.J. EllisBlake Hawksworth, and Ramon Troncoso. These four along with Angle will be interesting to watch this spring. Surprisingly I would not say Angle is the odd man out in this mix.

Angle, 26, has had very little major league in his baseball career. He spent most of the 2011 at AAA Norfolk as the starting center fielder, where he batted a .271/.347/.344 line in 489 plate appearances, that's led to a major league OPS of .559 in 95 plate appearances. While his bat is suspect, he has two phenomenal tools. Defensively he's well above average, he can handle all three outfield spots. He was considered the best defensive outfield in the Orioles minor league system. However, Angle's best tool is by far his speed. He has a career minor league OBP of .372 and stole 11 out of 12 bases with the Orioles, stealing another 27 in the minors.

Baseball Prospectus 2012 had this to say on Angle.
Angle’s best tool is his speed, which he put on full display in his first taste of the big leagues: despite a mere .293 OBP, Angle stole 11 bases in 95 plate appearances thanks to an absurd 55 percent attempt rate and a 92 percent success rate. Widely considered the best defensive outfielder in the system, his bat is suspect. He has no power to speak of and struck out 18 percent of the time at Triple-A, unacceptable for a guy without pop and without Ichiro’s BABIP. Still, he takes some walks, and if he can manage to stretch his tools, his best case scenario is becoming a toned-down version of Michael Bourn.
At the young age of 26 I like this move. For the very low price of absolutely free you are getting a guy who flies on the basepaths and is a plus outfield defender. So maybe Baltimore gave up too early on this guy, or perhaps we are clogging our 40 man roster some more, either way there is zero risk, so I am going to call this a slam dunk.
