Despite having led the NL West three weeks ago and recently adding some big names, the Los Angeles Dodgers won't be able to escape second place this weekend. The San Francisco Giants have overcome losing a marquee player to jump well past them. This pivotal three-game set in the Bay Area starts Friday night with one of the Dodgers' star acquisitions getting his first taste of this rivalry, as Josh Beckett goes up against Tim Lincecum in a matchup of former aces having mediocre seasons. "It is a big series," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "This is September baseball. You're watching the scoreboard and it's going to be intense. This is why you play the game." San Francisco (77-60) has a 4 1/2-game division lead over second-place Los Angeles. The Dodgers (73-65) were alone atop the West as recently as Aug. 19 but have since lost 10 of 16, including a 5-7 record following the blockbuster trade with Boston for Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Cr...

Kenley Jansen Should Return In 11 Days

The Dodgers have announced that their lights out closer Kenley Jansen may return this season. Jansen was shut down after he experienced a recurrence is his heart condition that caused him to miss time last season. Jansen has been placed on blood thinning medication and he should be able to return to the bullpen on the 18th. Jansen threw a bullpen Wednesday and experienced no issues...

Dodgers transfer Billingsley to 60-day DL

LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles Dodgers today transferred right-handed pitcher Chad Billingsley to the 60-day disabled list (right elbow pain) and selected the contract of left-handed reliever Steven Rodriguez from Double-A Chattanooga. Billingsley, who last pitched on Aug. 24 against the Marlins, went 10-9 with a 3.55 ERA in 25 starts this season, finishing the campaign on a six-game...

Los Angeles Dodgers expensive summer turns into freefall

First they were overachievers.  Then, they did exactly as expected.  Now, they are underachievers.  And so sums up the Los Angeles Dodgers 2012 season up to this point. Luis Cruz is currently hitting .306 for the Dodgers, the sixth organization he has been with 2001. When the Dodgers entered Father’s Day weekend with the most wins in baseball, the stories were all about the...

Pablo Sandoval makes great diving catch

Pablo Sandoval would seem like an unlikely candidate to be involved in two of baseball’s most athletic plays of the season, but the Panda has turned in two amazing plays over the past few weeks. After Sandoval and Brandon Crawford teamed up for an unreal tandem catch last week, the hefty third baseman made highlight reels again last night after laying out to snag a (crappy) bunt...

Could Melky still win batting title?

Melky Cabrera won't go away. Even as the first-place San Francisco Giants have moved on -- quite famously, in fact, with a 13-7 record since his steroid suspension -- Cabrera's name remains a nuisance to any fan who checks the National League batting statistics. That's right: Cabrera still leads the league with a .346 batting average. At a time when Major League Baseball...

The Upcoming Dodgers Series

Tonight, the Giants begin a three-game series against the Dodgers. San Francisco currently has a four and a half game lead in the NL West, so at worst, they’ll exit this series with a one and a half game lead. These next three games are obviously crucial: after this, the Giants’ only remaining series against the Dodgers is a three-game set in Los Angeles that will take place...

ESPN picks up Dodgers game on September 23rd for Sunday Night Baseball

The anticipation surrounding the Los Angeles Dodgers' only trip to Cincinnati this season is beginning to build. The Dodgers won't be rolling into Great American Ball Park until two weeks from now (Sept 21-23), but there's already been a couple of scheduling changes in preparation for the potential of a pivotal series. ESPN and the Reds announced on Friday...

Marco Scutaro Making His Presence Felt for the San Francisco Giants

When the San Francisco Giants acquired Marco Sctuaro from the Colorado Rockies on July 27, most observers didn’t see that move as a game-changer. General Manager Brian Sabean made another calculated move that has paid off with Scutaro’s terrific play since joining the team.   He is batting .329 in 38 games smacking 51 hits, 10 doubles, one triple, two homers, 24 RBI’s, seven...

Dodgers and GM Colletti talking extension

The Los Angeles Dodgers and GM Ned Colletti are in the midst of extension talks for the GM, Bill Shaikin of the LA Times reports. Though Dodgers President Stan Kasten wouldn't comment on the potential deal, he did say, “People should regard our management as stable and permanent.” Colletti's deal is set to expire at the end of the season. Colletti was hired as the Dodgers...

Kemp's HR robbed, Dodgers edged by Padres

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Center fielder Cameron Maybin robbed Matt Kemp of a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning after Carlos Quentin put San Diego ahead with a sacrifice fly, and the Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 Wednesday night to take two of three games in the series. The loss kept the Dodgers 4 games behind the first-place Giants in the NL West, with a pivotal three-game...

More Ned Colletti?

Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times (which I swear exists in this, the second-largest city in the United States, despite apparently having none of the larger cultural effect that the New York Times, or even the Wall Street Journal, has) apparently reported that the Dodgers are in extension talks with Ned Colletti. I don't really know the details, because I didn't actually...
