Your browser does not support iframes. The Nationals are fighting to maintain the lead in the NL East and top spot in the NL for the playoffs, so they can hardly afford mistakes by their players, much less ones by the umpires. But that’s what they dealt with on Wednesday night. The Dodgers were up 5-0 in the bottom of the 4th and had runners on second and third with two outs. Hanley Ramirez grounded a ball to third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who tagged out Adrian Gonzalez who was going from second to third. Zimmerman tagged out Gonzalez for the final out before Matt Kemp, who was on third, reached home plate, as you can see in the image below: Because Gonzalez was tagged out before Kemp touched home, the inning should have ended with the score remaining 5-0. However, the umpires huddled to talk over the play at manager Don Mattingly’s request, and ultimately ruled that Kemp scored before Gonzo was tagged out. Obviously they blew that call by at least 10 feet. Had they been giv...

Ryan Zimmerman’s rolling punch/tag of Adrian Gonzalez in the balls/taint was the play of the game

There’s no way around it, yesterday’s game was a mess, but besides somehow managing to win, the best highlight was probably Ryan Zimmerman tagging/punching Adrian Gonzalez in the balls/taint. Not only did it provide amusement, but it inexplicably led to the Dodgers getting the extra run needed to win the game without going to extras. See? Even Ryan Zimmermann regrets violating...

Nats 3B Zimmerman could need offseason surgery

Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman planned to get a cortisone shot for his right shoulder before Washington's doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. Manager Davey Johnson said offseason surgery to clean out Zimmerman's shoulder ''will definitely be seriously considered.'' General manager Mike Rizzo said that if Zimmerman does have...

Offense sputters as Matt Kemp and Dodgers edge out Reds in extras

This guy put the clinch on hold, for now A Cardinals loss to the Cubs earlier in the day meant that the Reds could clinch their second NL Central title in three seasons with a win over the visiting Dodgers on Friday. Unfortunately, the Reds (91-60) will have to wait at least one more day after suffering 3-1 defeat to LA (78-73) in extra innings. There wasn't much...

The Dodgers should shut down Clayton Kershaw and Matt Kemp

Look, I'm not one for giving up on a season -- and that's in no way what I'm doing here -- but the Dodgers need to make a couple decisions and stick with them. The Dodgers need to shut down Clayton Kershaw and Matt Kemp for the remainder of the season. I know this isn't going to be a popular opinion, well, anywhere, but I truly believe it's the right...

Pigs fly, snowball fights in hell, cats and dogs living in peace, and the Washington Nationals clinch a postseason berth

Nationals 4, Dodgers 1: Oh, that's weird. There's Ryan Zimmerman in a "Playoffs 2012" cap, and a postseason Natitude t-shirt. First postseason berth by a Washington baseball team since 1933? Weird. OK, go get the NL East pennant next. Now that'll really be weird. Uncharted waters...time to put the Natinals to rest. (Screencap of Zim via...

Here's how far Matt Kemp was from home plate when the final out was recorded in the 4th inning

That's pretty far. Matt Kemp scored the sixth run of the game for the Dodgers in the fourth inning, despite the fact that Ryan Zimmerman clearly tagged out Adrian Gonzalez at third with Kemp at least six? seven? feet from home plate. It would be so much easier if we could just blame the ****** umpiring on the NFL Replacement Refs, but alas, this is MLB, and these are...

Kemp's single sends Dodgers over Reds in 10

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Matt Kemp's two-out single with the bases loaded in the 10th inning sent the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-1 victory Friday night that denied the Cincinnati Reds on their first chance to clinch the NL Central. The Dodgers won for only the fifth time in 15 games and moved two games behind St. Louis for the final NL wild card. They also trail Milwaukee by a half...

Reds can't clinch in 10th-inning loss to LA

Nationals 3, Dodgers 1

Nearing their first playoff berth since arriving in Washington, the Nationals scratched out a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opening game of a doubleheader Wednesday, supporting Jordan Zimmermann's six innings of one-run pitching with two RBI groundouts and a sac fly. The win was the Nationals' 90th, the most for a Major League Baseball club in the nation...

Allan Webster Excited to Pitch in Red Sox Organization, Brings Nasty Sinker With Him (Video)

Allan Webster was once a top prospect in the Dodgers organization. Now, he's one of the best in Boston's. Webster was acquired from Los Angeles on Aug. 25 when Boston traded away Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto to the Dodgers. He was 0-1 in two starts in Double-A since coming over, allowing eight runs over nine innings of work. Check out the video...

Nationals 4, Dodgers 1

The Washington Nationals brought postseason baseball back to the nation's capital for the first time since 1933, clinching a playoff spot Thursday night with a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
