Ken Rosenthal is reporting this evening that Jerry Hairston Jr. already has three suitors lining up for his services. Rosenthal names the Dodgers, Giants, and Brewers as having expressed interest in the super-utility man. He also adds that Milwaukee has already offered Hairston a one-year deal, no report on the dollars involved.

Hairston, 35, hit .270/.344/.383 in 376 plate appearances for the Nationals and Brewers in 2011. The plus side of Hairston is he has a significant amount of experience at each position on the field, with the exception of first base and catcher. This makes Hairston extremely versatile and Hairston has shown pretty consistently that he can handle the starter role for extended periods of time offensively as well.

The Dodgers lack depth we all know this, no surprise with the interest in adding the veteran Hairston, and Mattingly could use him essentially anywhere and everywhere next season. I don't love this guy, but I will say he adds a lot of depth, as he is a true utility player. With injury concerns already at the forefront of my mind as it pertains to Uribe, Rivera, and the newly acquired Mark Ellis over a whole season, plus Gordon needing an adequate backup, I kinda like the idea of having Hairston around. However, do not get this confused with me thinking that he is some sort of answer to any problem our 25 man roster has other than the fact he helps add depth at the current moment, because that is all Hairston is to the Dodgers. He will put average numbers, average defense, and just be average, but that isn't always a bad thing, right? Having a guy like him around is simply another piece missing in the puzzle. Perhaps another one-year $2MM deal gets the job done? He's signed them the last three years in a row, so why not?
