It’s Fife-tastic! Stephen Fife, recalled today to start against Miami with Jose Dominguez going back to Triple-A, is just the best kind of guy to have in your organization. You never, ever want to start a season with him in your rotation, and you don’t ever want to have to rely on him for 30 starts, but you know that a few times a year you’re going to need to dip into the minors and ask for some solid innings from him, and more often than not he’ll deliver. Of course, 2014 hasn’t exactly gotten off to a wonderful start for Fife down in Triple-A. I’m not too worried about his walk rate, because that’s almost entirely the result of a single game. (In five of his six appearances, he’s walked zero or one; in the other, a start on April 14 against Tacoma, he walked six.) I am, however, worried about his sudden inability to miss bats. In 20.1 innings, he’s whiffed only 11. That’s not going to fly in the minors, and it’s certainly not going to work in the big leagues. Dodgers ...

This Photo Of Yasiel Puig Running Into The Right Field Wall Is Near Perfect

No one is going to question the hustle that Yasiel Puig has on defense, and this weekend was another great example. Even though it didn’t work out and he got his “bell rung,” Puig showed that he will put his body on the line when it counts. Next time, he just needs to actually catch the ball, especially when the game is on the line. Crash! @Dodgers Yasiel Puig (via @AP) http...

Hyun-jin Ryu’s Previous Shoulder Injury

Via Yesterday, after we learned that Hyun-jin Ryu was sent to the disabled list due to an inflamed shoulder, there was a momentary panic. Shoulder injuries for pitchers are never good, and shoulders are a lot more difficult to fix than elbows. However, the team has stated that the injury is minor. Further comfort came from the fact that this is not Ryu’s first time dealing with...

Dodgers' Hyun-Jin Ryu will begin throwing program on Tuesday

Following a visit to Dr. Neal ElAttrache today, Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu will begin a throwing program on Tuesday, the team announced. He is currently on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. Ryu, 27, is pain-free and ElAttrache felt an MRI exam was not necessary. He had a similar injury while playing in Korea a few years ago but was fine after a few days of rest...

The Artful Dodgers: April Showers to Bring May Flowers?

As I write this, the first game of the Dodgers/Nationals series is currently being rain delayed, so I figure this is the right time to look back on the first full month of Dodger baseball and assess the True Blue state of affairs. So, how do the Dodgers look thus far? Well…good enough. They may sit in third place right now with an 18-14 record, but it’s not in a way that reflects...

Yasiel Puig Nearly Makes Incredible Catch, Slams Outfield Wall (Video)

Yasiel Puig has made plenty of spectacular plays in his young MLB career. He nearly made the play of his life on Sunday. With two outs in the ninth inning and a runner on third in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ game against the Miami Marlins, the talented outfielder nearly saved his team with a highlight-reel play when he leaped in front of the right field wall to go after a fly ball...

Bud Selig says his commissioner powers not enough to help Cuban players like Yasiel Puig reach MLB safer

The harrowing story of Yasiel Puig has been well told now in several places. It raised a pertinent question: Can something be done to make it easier and safer for Cuban players to reach Major League Baseball? If there is, commissioner Bud Selig says it is outside the scope of his abilities. "You’re getting into an international political situation," he said. "Commissioners...

Marlins starting to show knack for late-game heroics

MIAMI -- Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia turned to manager Mike Redmond and told him the club would get him a win on his birthday after the Mets intentionally walked Giancarlo Stanton to put runners at first and second with one out in a tie game in the ninth. Up to bat was Casey McGehee, no stranger to clubs pitching around a star player to face him. As a member of the Brewers...

Puig injured on final play of Dodgers' loss to Marlins

Yasiel Puig left Miami woozy, nursing a headache. And the throbbing music of a South Beach nightclub had nothing to do with it. Puig crashed violently into the outfield wall in the ninth inning, nearly making a spectacular game-saving catch. Instead, he was lying stunned, face down on the warning track as the winning run scored and the Miami Marlins took a 5-4 win over the Dodgers...

No one Bat Flips like Yasiel Puig Bat Flips in Miami

Yasiel Puig has really been something to marvel at lately. He got six hits on Thursday, stole a couple of bags last night, and then tonight he hit a monster home run in Miami that helped the Dodgers sneak by those tricky Marlins 9-7 in 11 innings. Monster bomb by Yasiel Puig off a Jacob Turner hanging breaking ball. It lands in Giancarlo territory, way out over The Clevelander....

His second attempt at rehab ended abruptly in the fouth inning of his first game for Double-A Jacksonville on Friday. He lunged for a throw at second base, felt his groin...

MLB Week in Review: NL West

The Dodgers have fallen to third place, but should be getting Kershaw back (via sportsmedia101) The NL West, usually one of the weaker divisions, has come out on fire to start May, with three teams well above .500. We’ve seen an early season favorite stuck in the middle of the division, a recent World Series champion reassert its dominance, and the team with the most losses (23...

Jarrod Saltalamacchia Laughs Off Braves’ Suspicion Marlins Stole Signs

Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia finds it somewhat amusing that the Atlanta Braves suspected the Fish of stealing signs following the teams’ recent three-game series in Miami. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez and pitcher Aaron Harang were among those suspicious about the Marlins outscoring the Braves 23-7 during a three-game sweep, although Atlanta didn’t find any evidence...
