If you have the opportunity to see Yasiel Puig play, pay the money, because you’re likely to see something special. Friday night’s Puig highlight was a diving catch, as he was coming in and to his left and robbed Chicago Cubs IF Darwin Barney of a sure hit. What I want you to watch is the economy of steps. By the time the camera catches Puig who got a great jump, he makes 8, maybe 9 strides in a perfectly direct line to the ball, times the dive perfectly, and scoops the ball a few inches from the ground. Then simply let’s his momentum stop (as if he was on a water slide) as he shows the ump the ball. Poetry in motion (courtesy of MLB.com)
Even the umpire Greg Gibson wasn’t sure and apparently (off screen signaled safe before Puig kind of showed him “No blue, I got it”.)
