LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles Dodgers today announced the signing of right-handed reliever Todd Coffey to a one-year contract with a club option for 2013. The announcement was made by Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti.
The 31-year-old went 5-1 with a 3.62 ERA and limited opposing hitters to a .244 batting average in 69 games last season with Washington. Against right-handed hitters, Coffey posted a .193 opponents batting average with just a .250 on-base percentage and a .290 slugging percentage. He also limited first batters faced to a .175 mark (11-for-63) with 17 strikeouts last season.
Coffey has gone 24-18 with 11 saves and a 4.08 ERA in seven Major League seasons with the Reds (2005-08), Brewers (2008-10) and Nationals (2011). Since 2005, he ranks fifth among big league relievers with 683 ground balls induced, trailing only Chad Qualls (891), Shawn Camp (765), fellow Dodger reliever Matt Guerrier (732) and Mariano Rivera (692). Coffey has excelled in a long-relief role throughout his career, posting a 1.63 ERA and .213 opponents batting average in his 45 appearances of 2.0 innings or more.
Coffey, whose full name is Justin Todd, resides in Rutherfordton, NC with his wife Nikki, daughters Hannah and Haley and son Harrison. He was originally selected by Cincinnati in the 41st round of the 1998 First-Year Player Draft out of Chase (NC) High School.

Todd Coffey Signs With Dodgers
This may seem odd, but Todd Coffey is one of my favorite relievers in baseball. I have this thing for middling, fringe-y relief pitcher — Casey Fossum has stolen my heart — and there’s just so much of Coffey to love. How can you not love a teddy bear like him, especially considering he’s an underrated asset?
