Phenom Yasiel Puig left the Los Angeles Dodgers' 6-1 win over the Colorado Rockies Thursday night in the seventh inning after experiencing some soreness in his left hip area, manager Don Mattingly said. Puig is considered day to day with the injury according to according to Austin Laymance of MLB.com. Puig, who went 2-for-4, left the game shortly after his seventh-inning strikeout and was replaced in center field by Andre Ethier. Puig said after the game he wasn't sure if he would be able to play Friday. The injury, he said, was the remnant of a collision with an outfield wall in Colorado last week. "I have to get some treatment tomorrow, but it doesn't really bother me now," Puig said through a translator. Mattingly and Puig both denied a report that Puig was taken out of the game because of a clubhouse tirade following his strikeout on a Manny Corpas pitch well off the outside corner. He has struck out 11 times in his past 29 plate appearances. "He was fine," Mattingly said. "How do these rumors get started? He's a lightning rod, isn't he?" Puig laughed when he was asked if he was angry after being taken out of the game. "No, I feel good. The team won, so why wouldn't I feel good?" he said. Puig's injury originated July 3 when his left leg struck the padding that covers supporting poles in the right-field wall at Coors Field. "It didn't seem serious, but as the game went on it looked like it was starting to tighten up a little bit," Mattingly said after the Dodgers beat the Rockies, 6-1. "It didn't seem worth it to take any chances with him. We'll see what he looks like tomorrow." "It's been bothering me ever since," Puig said through a translator. Puig said he wasn't sure if he could play Friday and would have to see how he responds to treatment. Puig started in center field Thursday for the first time in his short Major League career. While Puig has primarily played right with the Dodgers, the Cuban prefers center. "When I told him he was playing center field tonight, I thought he was going to hug me and kiss me," Mattingly said. "He was all excited about that. That's kind of the place he likes the best." The Dodgers had limited options in center with Matt Kemp on the disabled list, Skip Schumaker finishing a two-game suspension stemming from the last month's brawl with the D-backs and Ethier out of the starting lineup against Rockies left-hander Drew Pomeranz. Puig played some center with Double-A Chattanooga before his promotion in early June. He moved from right to center for two innings June 9 against the Braves. Puig's average has finally dipped below .400, which could be more breaking news than his sore hip. He's now hitting .397 with 8 bombs and 19 knocked in.
