Found August 30, 2013 on Mets Merized Online:
We all know the deal by now: Juan Lagares is pretty good in the outfield. No, scratch that — he’s probably the best defensive center fielder I have seen on the Mets since Carlos Beltran. He takes great routes to balls, accelerates with ease, and packs a cannon for an arm. He’s always been touted as a potential prospect in the Mets system and the guys here at MMO have always liked him as well. When I ranked him in our Top 25 in the offseason last year, I distinctly remember Joe D. getting into an argument defending the call…and well, looks like it worked out okay. In fact, he’s actually forcing me to learn some new stats to describe how good he is. My colleague Xtreemicon explained the “ARM” stat to me, which Juan Lagares leads the league in. Basically, it’s a stat, plus or minus like WAR, that gives credit to outfielders based on how runners react to their fielding. Runners can stay, take an extra base, or get thrown out — so the stat accounts for runners staying put or not taking ...

Dillon Gee Is Pitching For His Job

The Mets know it. We know it. Hell, he knows it too. When people projected the future rotation for 2014 or 2015, Dillon Gee was never the first name that came to mind. Even Jeremy Hefner heard his name tossed around more because of his experience working out of the pen. Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Jon Niese, Rafael Montero, Noah Syndergaard, Jenrry Mejia…yeah, those are the names...

Matt den Dekker Will Be Center (Field) Of Attraction Today

Providing the weather clears, the New York Mets will run out another rookie this afternoon: lanky center fielder Matt den Dekker. This kid can fly and run down a ball in the gap with anybody the Mets have, but is a slow study at the plate. Den Dekker’s opportunity comes in the aftermath of the trade of Marlon Byrd to Pittsburgh. A capsule of den Dekker’s production was last...

Wright Says He’ll Return This Season, Heads To PSL For Rehab Games

David Wright spoke with reporters and is on his way to Port St. Lucie to begin his rehab, the team announced. As he’s said before, Wright fully intends on returning this season. ”It’s pretty much against everything I believe in to shut it down,” Wright said about shutting it down for the rest of this season. Wright has been on the disabled list since suffering a strained...

Is the wind out of the Mets sail for good this year?

Are you excited for the final month of baseball, Mets’ fans? Clearly that’s a rhetorical question. With the Mets dropping six of their last seven games, the grittiness and fight that this team displayed shortly after the All-Star break, all but seems to have dissipated. The air has been let out of the balloon as far as this season goes. Obviously, it’s not just the mounting...

Carlos In Charge: Torres Shines In Mets Romp Of Phillies, 11-3

Carlos Torres was locked in from the second this game started and seemed determined to prove that he deserved a spot in this rotation. Of course, if he pitches the way he did today on a consistent basis, it’d be hard to keep him out of it — even though he’s sort of landed in the role by default by now. With Jeremy Hefner, Jenrry Mejia, and Matt Harvey all down with injury while...

Davis Goes Deep, Gee Dominates Nationals In 3-2 Win

Dillon Gee put together quite a start tonight for the New York Mets when he baffled the Nationals over nearly eight innings of work. His only blemishes were two solo home runs given up — one in the bottom of the third to Wilson Ramos and another in the bottom of the eight to Steve Lombardozzi. He surrendered just six hits overall and walked one batter while striking out three....

The Odd Couple's Triple Play at Shea Stadium

The New York Mets have a treasure chest of memories, moments, and merriment — Tom Seaver winning the National League Cy Young Award three times, Mr. Met serving as the first three-dimensional mascot for Major League Baseball, and the 1969 Mets performing a baseball miracle by beating the vaunted Baltimore Orioles in the World Series. One of the greatest achievements in Mets history...

Mets offense batters Phillies pitching in 11-3 rout

Shortly after doing an unfamiliar meeting with the media in the Mets clubhouse following Thursday’s 11-3 drubbing of the Philadelphia Phillies there was something waiting for Anthony Recker beyond the room’s outer doors. A member of the team’s food staff was standing holding a birthday cake in her arms with a lone flickering candle atop it. Thursday was Recker’s birthday...
