At this point, a roster move breaking out of nowhere is nothing new for us Sox fans in 2013. But Wednesday afternoon, an unexpected demotion took place as Donnie Veal (pictured below, H/T AP) was sent to AAA Charlotte. Last year, Donnie Veal was dominant out of the White Sox' pen. He appeared in 24 games, pitching 13 total innings and bolstering a staggering 1.38 ERA. More importantly, lefties hit .094 against him, which led the team to believe he'd be a very valuable piece to the 2013 squad; and understandably so. But 2013 hasn't gone so well thus far for Veal, as his ERA is north of 4.00 and lefties are hitting .455 against him. For anyone, let alone a LOOGY, that just won't suffice. So on Wednesday the Sox announced that they've demoted him to AAA Charlotte. Given what we know he's capable of doing, let's all hope he straightens himself out in the minors and can help the team win some ball games at the major league level before it's all said and done this year. But with this news comes a positive, as well, as the team has promoted friend of the site, Brian Omogrosso to the big leagues. Last season Omogrosso got his first shot at the big leagues and impressed through 21 innings (17 appearances) for the south siders with his 2.57 ERA. And in spring training this March he picked up where he left off, as he tossed the most innings of anyone in the spring who didn't let up a run. We all knew we'd see Brian with the team sooner rather than later, and with the recent struggles of the guys in the 'pen, Robin Ventura and Don Cooper must think it's time to shake things up and give the likes of Matt Lindstrom and Nate Jones a little competition down there. Though 'Omo' can be stretched out a bit, expect Duente Heath to retain the long reliever role, as the team seems set on keeping Brian in a late-inning role. Overall, the 'pen has been good this year though, so hopefully Omogrosso can just add to the late inning depth, something that has not looked too good throughout the past couple series. >> Remember when we interviewed Omogrosso just a few weeks ago?!
