It’s still unclear whether the Diamondbacks will trade right fielder Justin Upton. But shortstop Stephen Drew appears to be generating enough attention to get moved. The Pirates, Red Sox and Tigers are among the teams interested in Drew, according to major-league sources. The Pirates’ .515 OPS at short is the worst in the majors. The Red Sox likely would use Drew as a backup infielder. The Tigers could play him at short or use him off the bench. Drew, 29, is batting only .192 with a .496 OPS in 57 plate appearances after returning from a right-ankle injury that sidelined him for more than 11 months. However, Diamondbacks beat writer Nick Piecoro wrote in the Arizona Republic on Thursday, “It seems like Stephen Drew hits more balls hard for outs than anybody on the team.” Piecoro added, “The good news is, (Drew) seems to be moving and recovering well on his surgically repaired right ankle.” The Diamondbacks are unlikely to exercise their end of Drew’s $10 million mutual option at the end of the season. If they trade Drew, they could simply go back to Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald at short, the tandem that the team used earlier this season while Drew was injured. -Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi
