It was a farewell of sorts in New York yesterday, when Andy Pettitte made the start for the Yankees in what is more than likely is last ever Opening Week start. Pettitte was spectacular in the Yankees'4-2 win over the Red Sox, allowing one run on eight hits over eight innings. Mariano Rivera made his first appearance in nearly a year and picked up his first save of his final season, but allowed a run in the process. I'm sure Yankees fans would love to see Rivera close out about 15 or 20 more Pettitte wins this year, but the realization that this is something that they might not see too much more often is beginning to set in. PIC OF THE DAY Josh Reddick celebrates a homer in the first inning, with his beard and long hair flying. Game of the Night: Blue Jays 10, Indians 8. Toronto picked up their first win of the season, and it came in exciting fashion. A Nick Swisher RBI double gave Cleveland an early 1-0 lead, but the Blue Jays bounced right back with three runs courtesy of homers by Jose Bautista and JP Arencibia. The Tribe tied it at three after back to back homers by Carlos Santana and Mark Reynolds, but the Jays regained the lead in the fifth after a three-run shot by Edwin Encarnacion. The Indians fought back AGAIN in the sixth to tie the game at six after run-scoring doubles from Santana and Lonnie Chisenhall, but Toronto responded with three of their own following homers by Arencibia and Colby Rasmus, along with a run scoring on a Reynolds error. Cleveland fought back to 9-8, but Toronto picked up another run, and Casey Janssen shut the door in the ninth to seal the deal north of the border. Pitching Lines of the Night: Cliff Lee obliterated the Braves in the Phillies' 2-0 win, allowing just two hits over eight scoreless innings, striking out eight without a walk. Travis Wood shut down the Pirates, but Carlos Marmol nearly blew the 3-2 Cubs win. Anyway, Wood allowed just one hit in six shutout innings, walking two and striking out four. James McDonald was nearly as good for Pittsburgh, allowing one run on two hits in seven innings, walking two and striking out four. Hitting Lines of the Night: Arencibia went 3/4 with two solo homers for Toronto. Santana went 3/5 with two runs, two RBI, a double, and a homer in Cleveland's loss. In the A's 8-2 win over the Mariners, the aforementioned Reddick went 2/3 with two runs, four RBI, a double, and a homer. The white hot Chris Davis led the Orioles to a 6-3 win over the Rays (with an assist from Evan Longoria's baserunning), going 2/3 with four RBI, a double, and a homer. Jayson Werth powered the Nationals to a 6-1 win over the Marlins, going 2/4 with two runs, three RBI, and a homer. Finally, Todd Frazier helped the Reds beat the Angels 5-4, going 2/3 with two runs, a double, and a homer. Other Games: The Twins battered the Tigers 8-2 to take the series from the reigning AL champs. The Royals pitching staff finally showed up in a 3-1 win over the White Sox. The Padres cooled off the Mets bats, winning 2-1.  What You Missed: Ian wrote about the Tigers already having issues with their closer position. Carlos Gomez's awesome catch on Wednesday seemed...familiar. CM Punk is throwing out the first pitch at Citi Field today, and ESPN's Adam Rubin is clueless. Today's Games: Doug Fister starts for the Tigers in their home opener against the Yankees. Josh Johnson makes his Toronto debut against the Red Sox. Wade Davis makes his Royals debut in Philadelphia. Dan Haren will make his Nationals debut in Cincinnati. Matt Moore starts for the Rays against the Indians. Kyle Lohse makes his Milwaukee debut against NL Rookie of the Year runner-up Wade Miley of the Diamondbacks. Zack Greinke will make his long-awaited Dodgers debut against the Pirates. Enjoy your day of baseball, everyone. [follow]
