The Pittsburgh Pirates are clinging to their hopes of a playoff berth and a season over .500 for the first time in 20 years. Yet, games like last night make you think at times that these are the same old Pirates. Pittsburgh and Milwaukee were deadlocked at two after six before the Brewers scored four in the seventh, highlighted by a three-run double by former Pirate prospect Aramis Ramirez off of reliever Jared Hughes. Pittsburgh got one back in the seventh on a Rod Barajas solo homer, and made it a game in the ninth by scoring a pair and putting two on with two out for pinch hitter Gaby Sanchez...who struck out against Kameron Loe to end the game with a 6-5 Pirates loss. Coupled with the Cardinals 8-5 win over the Reds, the Pirates fall to two games out of the second wild card spot. They're still nine games above .500, so hitting that benchmark seems likely...but the playoff race is fading from their sights, and that's not a good thing at all for the black and gold ...

Hurdle Doesn’t Believe McCutchen is Repeating 2011 Second-Half Slump

Andrew McCutchen has had an impressive 2012 season. So much in fact that when Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle was asked about the All-Star center fielder, he said he was one of the most intelligent players he’s ever worked with in the 35-plus seasons he’s spent in professional baseball. “I don’t think I’ve ever met a more intelligent, mentally tough, balanced young man in...

A Healthy Clement Ready for Opportunity with Pittsburgh

It’s been a long journey back to the big leagues for Jeff Clement. But on Friday, the first baseman was given the opportunity to battle his way back when the Pirates selected him from Triple-A Indianapolis to join the club in Pittsburgh. Bad Economics Strike The Bucs Again

Reported first by ESPN and then I saw the same report for John Heyman of CBS, the Dodgers have just claimed Adrian Gonzalez off waivers from the Red Sox.  That is the type of piece to the puzzle the Pirates would love to have.   But they would have absolutely no chance to sign him.  He would cost the Pirates as much as Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker’s soon to be contract, and...
