Found May 26, 2013 on The Outside Corner:
Pedro Alvarez of the Pirates is one of the streakiest hitters in baseball. After homering just four times in April, Alvarez already has launched six bombs in May in 35 fewer plate appearances. In May, his OPS is nearly 300 points higher, and he's managed to do that with nearly identical strikeout and walk rates. Alvarez has hit some titanic homers as well, with the average distance of his blasts sitting at 404.7 feet, an above average mark that has him in the same company as teammates Starling Marte, Russell Martin, and Andrew McCutchen. While he's not the superstar many expected when Pittsburgh drafted him second overall in 2008, he's still a contributor at the very least. The Rockies jumped out to a 4-0 lead, blitzing Barry Zito over the first four innings of the game. T...

Prospect Watch: Cole Starts Rough, Then Throws Six No-Hit Innings

TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. Rankings are from the pre-season rankings, and links to each prospect writeup can be...

Draft Watch: Latest Mock Draft Has A New Name For Pirates

Minor League Ball put out their second mock draft yesterday and they added a new name to the mix for the Pittsburgh Pirates, High School catcher Nick Ciuffo.  The backstop from South Carolina was called possibly the best all around catcher in this draft class. Matt Garrioch, who posted the mock draft, thinks he could get to the majors faster than any other catcher in the draft class...

Draft Prospect Watch: College Bats and Middle Infielders To Watch Early On

The countdown to the draft has officially begun, just 12 more days until the Pittsburgh Pirates make their first three selections. College teams are gearing up for the College World Series now, some teams trying to make it in, while other teams have already seen their season end. Today, we take a look at some of the best bats available, that are still play. Also in the draft notes...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Milwaukee Brewers – Game 50

Pedro Alvarez was responsible for more runs than the Brewers yesterday.  Too bad this guy sits for Brandon Inge and his .560 OPS on a semi-regular basis. I mean, who needs a power bat in the lineup against righties at the home run haven Miller Park? There is a very real chance that if Pedro…

Pirates’ Jeff Karstens suffers setback

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Jeff Karstens had recently started his minor league rehab assignment. However, he experienced pain in his shoulder while  throwing yesterday, and as a result he’s been shut down, according to Travis Sawchik of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Following the discomfort, Karstens will undergo an evaluation of his ailing shoulder next week...

Pirates 5, Brewers 4

Wandy Rodriguez won his fourth consecutive start, Pedro Alvarez had a two-run double and the Pittsburgh Pirates built an early four-run lead before holding off the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 on Sunday. The Pirates have won 13 of 15 and are a season high 12 games over .500. Rodriguez (6-2) gave up three earned runs on seven hits in five innings to earn the victory. He struck out four...

Pedro bombs Miller Park twice as Bucs take game two

The Pirates must have listened to my recap and pretended they weren’t in Miller Park today.  Or maybe they forgot they were in Miller Park.  It’d be difficult to find another explanation for today’s 5-2 win, backed by two Pedro Alvarez homeruns and a stellar start by Jeff Locke. The Pirates jumped on Brewers starter…

Pirates 5, Brewers 2

The Pirates used a barrage of homers and another stellar outing from Jeff Locke to knock off the Brewers at Miller Park on Saturday afternoon. Locke was tremendous yet again. The lefty has now allowed three hits or less in six of his last seven outings, which is ridiculous. I know, I know, some more are going to start falling in against him sooner or later, but it’s impossible...

Minor League Schedule: McDonald and Morton Both Set For Rehab Starts

It will be an interesting day to watch the minor leagues, as two of the three teams playing today, have a Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher on rehab assignment. Charlie Morton will get the start for Indianapolis, while James McDonald begins his return with Altoona. Altoona has a noon start time. Bradenton has off today. For a look at the possible starters over the next few weeks...

The other Brett’s big day and longer than expected career

Thirty-nine years ago (5/27/1974) LHP Ken Brett pitched one of his best games. Pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates, he took a no hitter into the 9th inning, giving up a hit before shuting out the Padres. It was the first game of a double header, and it was Brett who would deliver a two-run pinch hit triple to lead the Pirates to a comeback 8-7 victory in the double header sweep....

Brewers 2, Pirates 1

The Bucs didn’t get off to a good start to their quest for a rare series win at Miller Park, as the bats fell silent in a tough 2-1 loss on Friday night. This wasn’t a typical Pirates loss in Milwaukee. It was no slugfest, the Brewers weren’t hitting the ball all over the park or parading around the bases, and nothing strange really happened at all. The Bucs just couldn’t...

Have You Seen Me?

This sweet Russell Martin Topps Triple Threads Triple All-Star Game Patch, #'d 6/9, was lost before it could be sent my way after a steal of a deal on eBay.If you ever come across it or one of the other 8 copies, please let me know. I'd be much appreciative and in a finder's fee mood.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Milwaukee Brewers – Game 49

I don’t even know why I bother with these Miller Park previews, the Pirates never win. I’m not sure it matter who pitches or anything.  Burnett pitched great but to no avail. What will Jeff Locke have to do tonight to win?  A complete game shutout?  Probably not.  He’ll have to hit a homer too.…
