The season is just a few weeks in but there are already some trends and numbers that should make people take notice.

1. Matt Kemp

My pre-season MVP and 2nd place finisher last year is on fire. He is batting .487 with 6 hr and 16 RBI’s through the Dodgers first ten games. In comparison, the entire Pittsburgh Pirate team has 16 RBI’s and only 4 hrs. Kemp’s fast start has LA out to a MLB best 9-1 start. Matt Kemp is really asserting himself as the next star in the game and maybe him and Magic Johnson can bring back DodgerTown!

2. The Red Sox and Yankees should be worried

The East is definitely going to be exciting but should we get so worked up about the early season struggles of these two franchises? The Yankees will certainly need to recognize that their resurrection in the mid-90′s was built on home grown talent but as those players have gotten older (Jeter, Rivera) or have retired (Posada), the team has really failed to continue that path to greatness. The Yankees getting to the playoffs is not enough. The Red Sox on the other hand hired a Wrestling manager to provide stability! Yes, Bobby Valentine is the Jimmy Hart of the baseball world. This was a bad decision by a team that needs direction not drama. Both teams need to re-evaluate their pitching staffs or they will be left behind by the likes the Rangers, Angels, and The Rays.

3. Pitching

Pitching continues to look great post real PED testing. Roy Halladay already has 3 wins with a 1.17 ERA. Aroldis Chapman has made 5 appearances and has maintained an unblemished ERA. Justin Verlander and Jered Weaver have 23 strikeouts through 3 starts. I like pitching and would prefer two starters to go head to head for 8 innings in a 1-0 game ala Clemens and Pedro. I also think when we have better overall pitching, that the great hitters are able to distance themselves from the “Steroid Era”.
