We've heard how Ed Wade spent the final minutes of the 2008 World Series, sleeping in his Houston apartment while many of the players he drafted and refused to trade during his tenure in Philly poured champagne and Bud Light on one another, as well as Pat Gillick. Because so many of the guys who rode parade floats down Broad Street were from Wade's era, history may be kinder to him than we have.
However, if things continue to go the way they have in Houston, where Wade now calls the shots, I wouldn't say it's too likely. The 'Stros are 17.5 games out of first, and they've already jettisoned their manager. There's talk that Wade could be in trouble as well. One thing that is possible though, is that Ed could have a great view of the Phillies celebrating a division title this season. The Fightins welcome their old friend and his team for four at the Bank, starting tonight.
They'll face a former Phillie farmhand in Yorman Bazardo, who has been fed to the buzzards in his four appearances over the last month (get it, because he's been awful and his name's Baz—never mind. sorry.) No really though, he's been pretty bad. With a few decent at bats tonight, the Phillies should help keep the closer question off our minds with some solid run support for Cole Hamels. Cole had been on a great streak before letting up 4 earned to the Marlins in his last start, so he could use a tune up. Overall though, he's done a great job of regaining his spot atop the playoff rotation, which has worked well in the past, if I recall.
Houston has some pop at the plate though, so it won't come as easy as we might think by looking at their 2-8 record over the last 10. The Phils lineup is per usual, with Paul Bako catching for the sore wrist of Chooch Ruiz.
