The Red Sox may have been officially eliminated from post season contention, however there are still baseball games to be played and happily still some wins to be had.  The Sox went from being no hit by the Rays to taking the lead and never looking back.

Aaron Cook took the mound for the Sox.  Like many Sox fans, I didn't have a huge amount of confidence in him since he's had a bad habit of being good for a few innings and then just becoming real hittable.  However, Cook showed that he still has value to the ball club and pitched pretty gosh darn well.  While Cobb was no hitting the Sox, Cook was keeping the team in the game.  Cook did give up a single run in the 5th to give the Rays a lead, but it wouldn't last for long.  Cook gave up the run when Roberts hit a sac bunt to score Luke Scott.  Sox 0-1.  The Sox would get the lead for Cook in the next inning.  Jose Iglesias was hit by a pitch and then Jacoby Ellsbury hit his 4th HR of the season.  Sox 2-1.  Cobb and catcher Molina got into some kind of argument in the dugout after the inning.  In the 7th, the Sox bats kept at it.  Loney singled, Salty walked and then Lavarnway reached on an error.  We had the bases loaded and no outs.  Mauro Gomez hit a 2 run RBI single to score Loney and Salty.  Sox 4-1.  Iglesias hit a sac bunt to move the runners along.  The Rays IBB Ciriaco to try to put the double play back in order.  Fortunately for us, Ellsbury hit an RBI single instead to give the Sox another run.  Sox 5-1.  The Rays got the final two outs without any more runs scoring.  Rich Hill and Junichi Tazawa pitched scoreless innings in the 7th and 8th.  Mark Melancon allowed a run to score in the 9th on a Zobrist RBI groundout.  However he got out of the inning without Bailey having to come into the game.

Post season or no post season, it's still a happy day when the Red Sox get a win!

Red Sox 5 Rays 2 BOXSCORE
