I remember watching Elvin Ramirez pitch earlier this season for the Mets against the Nationals and then again vs. the Yankees and thinking he just wasn’t quite ready for the moment.  In those two contests the 24-year-old gave up 5 ER on 6 hits and walked 7 batters in just 3 1/3 IP.  I felt like David Seville in the Chipmunks looking at my television and yelling ‘Elvvvviiiiinnnn’.  Though Ramirez struggled in his debut and subsequent outing, he responded by allowing only one earned run over his next two appearances for New York (3 IP, 3 H, 2 K) before being optioned back to Triple-A.

Today the team announced Ramirez will be recalled and take the spot of recently designated Miguel Batista in the pen.  According to the official press release:

The New York Mets today announced the team recalled righthanded pitcher Elvin Ramirez from Buffalo (AAA) of the International League and designated righthanded pitcher Miguel Batista for assignment.  Ramirez will wear uniform #62 and will be available for today’s game.

Ramirez, 24, joins the Mets for the second time this season.  The 6-3, 210-pounder went 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA (seven earned runs/7.0 innings) and 11 hits allowed in five games during his first stint in the majors, June 1-June 22.  Over 29 games combined at Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League and Buffalo (AAA) of the International League this season, Ramirez went 3-1 with two saves and a 1.99 ERA (nine earned runs/40.2 innings).  He struck out 43.”

I don’t know if this will work out or not but I do know that I’d much rather see a young pitcher with Elvin’s upside go through growing pains than watch Miguel Batista struggle through aging pains.  I’ve said for some time now, “do something, anything, to change up this bullpen.”  This move falls into that category and regardless of how well Ramirez pitches I think fans will respond to having some young players gaining experience with the big club as they develop.
