The St. Louis Cardinals epic 9th inning collapse yesterday against the New York Mets was reminiscent of this marvelous display of ineptitude 13 years ago today in Milwaukee.
On September 23, 1998 the Chicago Cubs led the Milwaukee Brewers 7-5 in the bottom of the 9th inning with two outs and two strikes nearly costing them their season.
This game had everything. Historic Home Runs. Dominant Pitching. Great Fielding. Horrible Relief Pitching. A Dramatic Ending.
During the contest, Sammy Sosa swatted his 64th and MLB record tying 65th home run of the season.
However, the drama in the ninth was breathtaking. The amazing part of the sequence was Cubs Manager Jim Riggelman elected to intentionally walk Jeromy Burnitz to load the bases and put the winning run on first base. Meanwhile, Brant Brown replaced Glen Allen Hill for late inning defense.
These two moves produced one of the most unbelievable finishes in MLB history.
