Theo Epstein expected some rough stretches for the Chicago Cubs. He didn't envision this. With 12 straight losses entering Monday's game against San Diego, the Cubs were on one of the longest skids in franchise history and tied with Minnesota for the worst record in the majors. Epstein says he doesn't think ''this is indicative of the type of team we are'' and that the Cubs are ''clearly better than this.'' Only seven times in their history had the Cubs dropped 12 or more in a row. They entered Monday's game on their worst losing streak since they opened with 14 losses in 1997.

Angels Show Baez-less Cubs No Respect

Hank Conger blasted a solo home run and an RBI double, Zach Borenstein hammered a three-run HR, and Mike Sodders cracked a three-run double, leading the Angels to a 17-1 thrashing of the Cubs at Diablo Park Field #3 in Tempe, AZ. Shawon Dunston Jr belted a home run leading off the game, and that was the only Cub run of the day. 19-year old RHP Tayler Scott (Cubs 2011 6th round draft...

Ryan Sweeney's Return to Lineup Just the Spark Red Sox Offense May Need

Editor's note: NESN.com is going to tell the story of the 2012 Red Sox in Bobby Valentine’s words. Each game day, we will select the best Valentine quote that sums up the day for the Red Sox. Ryan Sweeney's bright Hollywood smile said more about the outfielder's excitement to be back in the Red Sox lineup than any of his postgame comments on Monday. After missing the...

Adrian Gonzalez Thinks That Jarrod Saltalamacchia Should Get Consideration As An All-Star

BOSTON -- Jarrod Saltalamacchia currently leads all catchers in the majors with eight homers. The Red Sox backstop has been sizzling at the plate, belting three homers in the last six games. He's lifted his RBI total to 21 while raising his batting average to .274 from the .080 on April 19 -- and for that matter, a .221 average on May 21. His teammates are paying close notice...

Doubront tames Tigers, Sox win 7-4.

Felix Doubront continues the roll he's on as he goes six innings, allowing just two runs and he gets in his fourth win in five decisions as the Sox beat the Tigers, 7-4. The Sox got to Doug Fister early as they managed to score five runs in the first three innings. There was a blessing in diguise as Mike Aviles appeared to strike out but the umpires declared it to be a foul...

Vote: Will Jarrod Saltalamacchia Be an All-Star This Season?

Jarrod Saltalamacchia -- yes, it is 14 letters and the longest last name in baseball history -- has been the talk around Boston for the past week. Now, his name is being associated...

Pedroia won't need thumb surgery, hopes to avoid DL

For nearly a half-hour after Tuesday night's game, second baseman Dustin Pedroia tried to convince Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine, general manager Ben Cherington and the team's doctors and trainers that he can play through the pain in his right thumb. An MRI exam revealed that Pedroia has a tear in the adductor muscle. After reviewing the test results, the Red Sox...

Daniel Nava's Impressive At-Bat Against Justin Verlander Confirms Journeyman Is More Than One Hit Wonder

Daniel Nava was in just his second game atop the Red Sox lineup, and the career minor leaguer was forced to leadoff the game against the reigning AL MVP and Cy Young award winner. Justin Verlander made quick work of Nava the first time through the order, inducing the outfielder into a slow-rolling ground out to third base. But after working a walk his next time at the dish, Nava...

BOSTON -- Daniel Nava hit a three-run double, and the Boston Red Sox pounded Detroit ace Justin Verlander to move above .500 for the first time this season, beating the Tigers 6-3 Tuesday night. It was the 13th win in 18 games for the steadily climbing Red Sox (25-24), who remain last in the AL East but are just 3 1/2 games out of first place. Prince Fielder had a solo homer...

Rodriguez's blast puts away Red Sox

The clubhouse door opened up and the Tampa Bay Rays could be seen dancing - a stark contrast to what happened a night earlier. Dugout Digest - the Cubs just keep on losing

The Pirates obliterated the Cubs yesterday 10-4, to complete a three game sweep. The Cubs have dropped 21 straight, and are tied with the Twins for the worst record in baseball at 15-32. There's really no singular person to blame. The Cubs have only scored 33 runs over the 12 game skid, and have allowed 69. Chicago's top offensive player all season, first baseman Brian LaHair...
