North Side Notch:
Final: Orioles 12, Pirates 6
WP: Tommy Hunter (3-3, 5.58 ERA)
LP: Erik Bedard (4-7, 4.36 ERA)
The Orioles scored 10 runs in this one before the Pirates even got a single player on base. That is not a recipe for success.
The Pirates’ offense eventually woke up and scored six runs on ten hits, but it was way too late as this one was put out of reach early on.
Erik Bedard gave up seven runs in 3 1/3 innings in what was easily his worst outing of the season. All but one of those seven runs were scored with two outs.
Even the usually steady bullpen was pretty bad in this one. Doug Slaten gave up three runs, all on a Steve Pearce home run, to end his scoreless inning streak that dated back to the first week of April. Chris Resop did ok giving up just a run over 3 innings, and Jared Hughes gave up a solo homer to Mark Reynolds in the 8th.
Rod Barajas hit a 3-run homer in the 5th inning, his 6th home run of the season. Andrew McCutchen, Garrett Jones, and Clint Barmes were all 2 for 4.

The Pirates will look to avoid a sweep in Baltimore tonight.
Lots of stuff happened today:
It looks like Charlie Morton will need Tommy John surgery.
Everyone’s favorite TV reporter Lacee Collins is no longer working for ROOT Sports.
Jeff Karstens will make a rehab...
It won't be long before the Pirates' treasured pitching prospects make it to Pittsburgh. Gerrit Cole, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft and the best of those prospects, was promoted to Double-A Altoona just two months into his first professional season. He pretty much left the Pirates no choice, going 5-1 with a 2.55 ERA, 69 strikeouts and 21 walks in 67 innings...
Everyone in action today.
Indianapolis 5, Charlotte 3 – Jeff Locke started and gave up 2 runs in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out 4 and walked 2. Bryan Morris pitched 3 scoreless innings in relief. Chase d’Arnaud was 1 for 3 with a double. Jeff Clement went 1 for 4 with a double.
Altoona 7, Trenton 6 – The Curve trailed 6-1 in the bottom of the 9th and came back to win. Nathan...
This series in Baltimore has certainly not gone the Pirates' way through two games, but at least they have a favorable pitching matchup to try and sneak out of Baltimore with one win tonight as Erik Bedard goes up against Tommy Hunter. Bedard, of course, started his career with the O's and had his best years there, so maybe there will be some sort of added motivation for...
During the O’s 7-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night, Chris Davis did something quite remarkable. He swung, made contact, and broke his bat off at the handle.
Nothing extraordinary there, right? Guys break their bats all the time. Usually results in a weak pop up or grounder, and every once in a while the hitter gets lucky and bloops a single on a broken bat.
If the Pirates wanted to win their sixth straight series for the first time since 1992, they needed to keep the offense going from Game 1 of the Baltimore series and lock down the pitching. They didn’t do either. The offense was back to scoring fewer than two runs for the 18th time this season and the pitching staff gave up at least 7 runs for a second straight night in the 7...
J.J. Hardy receives a lot of accolades for his bat, and rightly so. He hit 30 home runs last season, which tied him with Troy Tulowitzi for the most among big-league shortstops. He also can flash the leather. According to The Fielding Bible, “J.J. Hardy could be the most underrated shortstop in baseball. He makes all the plays that he should and can make the exceptional play on...

Orioles place OF Endy Chavez on 15-day disabled list; Recall INF Steve Tolleson from Triple-A Norfolk
The Orioles today announced that they have placed OF ENDY CHAVEZ on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring, retroactive to June 13, and recalled INF STEVE TOLLESON from Triple-A Norfolk. Tolleson has batted .237/.275/.447 in...

I have said for years that the remedy for the poor attendance is not signing premier free agents, not signing "exciting name players" for marketing purposes, not putting "Baltimore" back on the away jerseys and not a better customer experience at the park. Those things are nice but factor that was going to move the needle for attendance was going to be winning...
So while the Pittsburgh media was going crazy trying to confirm that Charlie Morton would in fact need Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ligament in his throwing elbow, the Pirates’ starter had somehow managed to make it all the way to Alabama under the radar to get the surgery yesterday. The Buccos sent out an email around 6 p.m. confirming the operation so it Dr. Andrews was...
ORIOLES IN THE NEWS
Nolan Reimold, who started out the season on fire, looking like he was going to be a mixed league force in the outfield, continues to linger on the sidelines with that herniated disk in his neck (the pain has subsided, but there is still weakness in the area). Tuesday he was moved from the 15 day DL to the 60 day DL pushing back his return to action even farther...
Last night was a pretty disappointing game for the Pirates. Brad Lincoln got hit pretty badly and Wei-Yin Chen shut the offense down until it was too late and as a result, the Pirates fell behind early and then wasted a rare six-spot in a loss. Tonight they try to stop their losing streak before it even starts, though the Orioles' lineup facing Kevin Correia is something that...
