Robbie Erlin allowed four hits over 7 2-3 innings and fellow rookie Jedd Gyorko hit his 20th homer to lead the San Diego Padres to a 2-0 victory over the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. The Dodgers, fresh from clinching the division title on Thursday at Arizona, let their backups get the playing time. No Dodgers regulars were in the starting lineup after they secured their 12th NL West championship since divisional play started in 1969. Erlin (3-3) matched his career-high with seven strikeouts as only three Dodgers reached second base against him. Gyorko homered in the fifth inning, becoming the fifth rookie second baseman ever to reach that milestone. Gyorko gave the Padres a 2-0 lead when he hit a fastball from Edinson Volquez (9-12) 417 feet to center field. Gyorko, who had two RBIs, is the first second baseman to hit 20 homers in franchise history. Erlin is 2-1 with a 1.82 ERA in four starts since being recalled on Aug. 25, his fourth stint with the Pa...

Gyorko Loses Patience, Finds Power

Jedd Gyorko drew two walks last week. This may not sound like much, but it’s as many as he drew over the previous five weeks. When Gyorko made the big club out of spring training, he immediately established himself as an NL Rookie of the Year candidate by hitting .284/.341/.461 through his first 60 games and playing a better-than-expected second base. Then a right groin strain...

Poll: The Padres over the Remaining 50 Games (Part 5)

With ten more games in the books for the Padres the time has come to revisit the poll Avenging Jack Murphy put forth nearly two months ago. The predictions for the Padres over the remaining 50 games were not very promising then and when the team went 2-8 through games 113-122. The Padres turned things around during their next 10 contests and managed to go 5-5 during games 123...

While You Were Drinking (Coffee): Game 152 (SD vs PIT) Breakfasttown Edition

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after breakfast baseball and you were stuck at work for the whole thing. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking (coffee, on company-approved break that is). The Friars walked the plank in their final game this season against Pittsburgh, 10-1, on International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Of course they did...

Padres end positive trip with 10-1 loss to Pirates

The San Diego Padres still own PNC Park. They just let the Pittsburgh Pirates borrow it for a day. Neil Walker had four hits, including his 11th homer of the season, and drove in three runs to lead the Pirates to a 10-1 win over San Diego on Thursday as Pittsburgh salvaged the finale of a four-game series. Pedro Alvarez hit his NL-leading 34th homer for Pittsburgh. Jose Tabata...

Padres stymied by Dodgers' Kershaw in 4-0 loss

The San Diego Padres have inexplicably had Clayton Kershaw's number all season. On Saturday night, however, the former Cy Young Award winner struck back in a big way. Kershaw struck out 10 in seven dominant innings, Yasiel Puig and A.J. Ellis hit two-run homers and the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Padres 4-0 Saturday night. Kershaw held San Diego in check...

Daily Friar 9.21.13

Robbie Erlin was stellar for the Padres in last night’s 2-0 win over the Dodgers. He pitched his best game yet: 7.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 SO. Buddy Black pulled Erlin in the middle of the seventh after his pitch-count reached 105, but no matter, the bullpen kept the Dodgers off the board as Huston Street recorded his 32nd save of the season, sealing Erlin’s third major league...

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after a night at the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking. Burch Smith pitched 6 innings with 6...

While You Were Drinking: Game 153 (LA vs SD)

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after breakfast baseball and you were stuck at work for the whole thing. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking. The Dodgers clinched the NL West yesterday, leading to a pool party in Arizona. It also lead to something a bit less than the “A” lineup from them when the Padres returned home for the...

Gyorko spoils Volquez's return to Petco

Don Mattingly pulled a Gregg Popovich on Friday. The day after clinching a division title the Dodgers manager trotted out a lineup consisting almost entirely of backups. It was a calculated decision prioritizing rest for the team's dinged-up superstars over the pursuit of home-field advantage. Since a 30-42 start these Dodgers have undeniably gained an appreciation for the grand...
